An automated assessment of a patient's peripheral vascular condition includes using a pulse oximeter to generate at least a perfusion index relative to a limb or digit of the patient. Pressure is applied to the limb or digit, and while increasing or decreasing the pressure, a change in the perfusion index is determined. The change is indicative of a cessation of blood flow or a return of blood flow in the limb or digit. A systolic blood pressure is thereafter determined based on the pressure applied at the time of cessation of blood flow or the return of blood flow in the limb or digit. Using a pulse oximeter to generate a perfusion index may include transmitting light into the limb or digit, detecting light that was transmitted into tissue in the limb or digit, and calculating the perfusion index based on the light transmitted through the tissue.

Automated assessment of peripheral vascular condition

Methods, devices, and business systems are provided for insuring those who might use a defibrillator against at least some of the costs of using the device in a medical emergency event. The insurance may be purchased in advance of an event occurrence, and then redeemed after an event where the defibrillator is used. In a further embodiment, the insurer may request reimbursement from a patient or patient's insurance company following defibrillator use with or without involving the owner of the defibrillator.

Method and apparatus for compensating defibrillator operators following an event

In general, the invention is directed to management of information from a plurality of emergency medical devices, such as automated external defibrillators, and associated docking stations. The medical devices and docking stations may communicate with one another and with a remote unit. The managed information includes information pertaining to authorized access and maintenance, inspection indications and inspection certifications. In general, an authorized user can access the emergency medical device without activating alarms that would accompany an emergency. The authorized user can further use the user input interface to enter an inspection certification, which records the inspection, the maintenance performed, the date the device is returned to service, and so forth.
