An adjustment mechanism for a vehicle head restraint assembly is disclosed in which the head restraint pad is supported on one or more posts having a plurality of V-shaped detent notches for engagement by a wire spring to hold the head restraint pad in place. The posts fit into guide bushings which contain a flange enclosing a wire spring, a portion of which engages the notches during normal use to prevent unwanted movement of the head restraint pad while allowing vertical adjustment of its position. The spring and flange are constructed to distribute loads arising from adjustment of the head restraint pad to both sides of the spring, resulting in a relatively even distribution of the forces acting on the spring during adjustment and providing the spring with a longer fatigue life.

Head restraint adjustment mechanism

An inertia sensitive latch mechanism for preventing a motor vehicle seat back from folding from a normal upright position to a folded forward position when the seat is exposed to deceleration loads above a predetermined level including a pendulum pivotally mounted to the movable seat back having a notch and tooth for engaging a striker bar. The center of gravity of the pendulum is located such that when the seat back is urged from the upright position to the folded position when the vehicle is exposed to a predetermined deceleration load, the pendulum engages the striker bar to prevent movement of the seat back. The striker bar is movably mounted to the seat support and the latch mechanism includes a guide member adjacent the pendulum for moving the striker bar to a predetermined location relative to the pivot point of the pendulum as the seat back is moved into its normal upright position.

An inertia sensitive latch assembly particularly adapted for preventing forward dumping of a motor vehicle seat back. The embodiments are particularly suited for applications in station wagon vehicles having forward dumping capability of the second passenger seats. The device is enclosed within the seat back and includes a pendulum engageable with a latch hook affixed to a support structure. The pendulum engages the hook when the vehicle is subjected to deceleration loads above a predetermined level. In one embodiment of the invention, a retention clip device is provided which maintains the pendulum engaged with the latch hook after a deceleration load is relieved to maintain the seat in engagement throughout multiple impact vehicle conditions. Both embodiments are substantially enclosed within the seat back cushion structure, thus protecting them and providing an unobstructed load floor when the seat back is dumped forward.

A head rest for mounting on an automotive seat back comprises a rod fixed to the back, the rod having a generally horizontal mounting portion, a frame having a pad thereon, a mounting bracket secured to the frame, the bracket attaching the frame to the rod for pivotal movement of the frame forward and backward, and a frictional bushing sandwiched between the bracket and the frame. The bushing has a curved portion cupped over the mounting portion of the rod and fastening means clamping the frame and bracket together and biasing the friction bushing against the rod to resist pivoting of the frame about the rod. The rod further includes stop pins to limit the pivoting of the frame about the rod.

A head restraint assembly having a bushing member adapted for retaining and guiding a post supporting the head restraint pad of a motor vehicle seat back. The bushing is installed within the seat back and allows the head restraint pad to be positioned at various vertical positions to suit individual seat occupants. The head restraint post has a plurality of detent notches and a retainer notch. The bushing includes a detent lug engagable with the notches such that various indexed positions of the head restraint pad are provided. The detent notches of the post have ramped cam surfaces enabling the pad to be moved between the detent positions by exerting axial loads on the post. The retainer notch engages the lug to prevent inadvertent withdrawal of the head restraint pad. Complete withdrawal, however, is provided by an actuator mechanism which urges the lug to withdraw it from engagement with the post retainer notch. The release actuator includes a leaf spring element, having an end which can be depressed downwardly to exert an outward biasing force on the detent lug, causing the lug to be disengaged from the retainer notch enabling the head restraint post to be withdrawn from the head restraint.

Head restraint guide assembly

A pressure arm assembly is disclosed for use in a data recorder of the type employing a disc recording medium and a carrier supporting a magnetic head. The pressure arm assembly includes a bracket and an upper arm pivotally carried by the bracket for rotation about a transverse axis. A spring biases the arm into engagement with the head carrier. An automatic release lever is carried by the bracket and holds the upper arm in a first nonoperating position and releases the arm so that it may pivot under the action of the spring upon insertion of a disc into the data recorder.

Pressure arm assembly for disc recorders

A printing ribbon guiding and re-inking means is positioned to guide a continuous looped printing ribbon through a 180.degree. twist between the exit and entry points of a ribbon cartridge. The guiding and re-inking means includes a twist-locator or arrestor comprising a pair of opposing elongated flanges, for passing a ribbon therebetween, positioned between the exit and entry points of the ribbon cartridge to positively locate the twist in the ribbon in a particular area along its path of travel. This prevents movement of the twist into other areas and other ribbon-carrying mechanisms, where the twist could cause jamming or undesirable ribbon twisting. A spool support means integrally coupled to the flanges carries a re-inking spool which both applies ink to the ribbon and guides the ribbon between the flanges and the cartridge. The spool orients the transverse position of the ribbon to be substantially the same as the transverse position of the ribbon at the entry to the cartridge. The opposing flanges orient the ribbon so it is rotated 90.degree. in a direction transverse to movement with respect to the orientation of the ribbon at the entry to the cartridge.

Ribbon guiding and re-inking means for data printers and the like

A drive and improved ground spindle assembly for a disc recorder and particularly one using a rigid disc having a direct coupled spindle shaft arrangement which includes a disc support platform mounted concentrically at one end of the spindle shaft and a DC motor attached to the other end of the spindle shaft is disclosed. The drive spindle assembly includes a disc support platform incorporating air impelling vanes on one side and bleed orifaces extending through the disc support platform so that air is drawn along the spindle assembly to cool it and then impelled outwardly over both sides of the recording disc to aerodynamically fly the recording heads on a thin film of air moving radially over the surface of the disc. The motor is a brushless DC type motor having a permanent magnet rotor driven by a rotating magnetic field. Provision of the brushless DC motor and unique ground and sealing means eliminate airborne contaminants that impair the operation of prior art disc recorders of this type.
