A flip or calm-shell style mobile terminal comprises a mechanical hinge that doubles as an inverted-F antenna for auxiliary communication purposes such as with a Bluetooth transceiver or a GPS receiver.

Multi-frequency band antennas for use within wireless communicators, such as radiotelephones, are provided and include a first conductive branch configured to radiate in a first frequency band and a second conductive branch configured to radiate in a second frequency band that is different from the first frequency band. The first conductive branch includes opposite first and second end portions and opposite first and second edge portions that extend between the first and second end portions. A notch is formed in the second edge portion adjacent the second end portion. The second conductive branch includes opposite third and fourth end portions and opposite third and fourth edge portions that extend between the third and fourth end portions. The first and second conductive branches are connected together at the first and third end portions and are configured to electrically couple at the respective second and fourth end portions. Coupling is utilized between the first and second conductive branches to achieve bandwidth and gain results desired for the antenna.

Multi-frequency band inverted-F antennas with coupled branches and wireless communicators incorporating same

An antenna is provided for use in a wireless communications device having receive and transmit circuitry within a housing for receiving and transmitting radio signals. The antenna is built into the housing of the wireless communications device. A coupling plate is provided within the housing for transferring received and transmitted radio signals between the antenna and the receive and transmit circuitry. The coupling plate is connected to the receive and transmit circuitry and spaced from the antenna by a distance h , such that the received and transmitted radio signals are transferred between the antenna and the receive and transmit circuitry only by capacitive coupling between the antenna and the coupling plate.

Capacitively coupled plated antenna

Inverted-F antennas having elongated, conductive elements for use within communications devices, such as radiotelephones, are provided. An elongated, meandering conductive element having a plurality of spaced-apart U-shaped undulations is maintained in adjacent, spaced-apart relationship with a first ground plane. One or more of the U-shaped undulations capacitively couple to the ground plane and allow the antenna to resonate at lower frequencies and with a greater bandwidth. A second ground plane may be oriented in a direction transverse to the first ground plane so as to be positioned in adjacent, spaced-apart relationship with one or more of the U-shaped undulations. One or more of the U-shaped undulations can capacitively couple to the second ground plane, as well as to the first ground plane. In addition, one or more inductive elements may be electrically connected to an elongated conductive element.

Compact, broadband inverted-F antennas with conductive elements and wireless communicators incorporating same

Small antennas for internal mounting within wireless communicators, such as radiotelephones, that can operate within multiple frequency bands, including low frequency bands are provided. A planar radiating element overlies a pair of adjacent, spaced-apart, substantially parallel conductive strips that are electrically connected to ground. The conductive strips are configured to parasitically couple with the radiating element. The planar radiating element includes a first meandering segment and a second meandering segment that is a mirror image of the first meandering segment. The first meandering segment includes a set of periodically spaced-apart planar undulations, such as U-shaped portions, and the second meandering segment includes a corresponding set of periodically spaced-apart planar undulations. The first and second meandering segments are connected together in opposing relationship therewith to form a continuous, conductive loop.
