An apparatus and method is disclosed for identifying the root cause of device communication failures in a communication network comprising collecting communication data transmitted and received on the communication network from a controller and one or more devices operably connected to the communication network and analyzing the collected communication data to diagnose if communication data is local looping or has been lost between the controller and the one or more devices and the location of the fault in the communication network.

Apparatus and method for identifying device communication failures in communication networks

A method and system for detecting faults in a communication interface is disclosed. The communication interface is connected to a field device and a device bus comprising generating periodic diagnostic pulse by a programing unit. The programming unit is communicatively connected to the controller and a controller interface and provides the diagnostic pulse to a multiplexer to periodically apply the diagnostic pulses from the programming unit to a first winding of a transformer. The programming unit provides the diagnostic pulse to the isolation unit. A sensing unit senses a voltage drop across a sense resistor, the sensing unit having an input connected to the sense resistor and an output connected to the programming unit. The sensing unit communicates a sense signal based on the comparison to the programming unit, and switches from a primary or a secondary module to the other based on the sense signal.

Apparatus and method for diagnosing faults in a fieldbus interface module

An apparatus and method is disclosed for the secure access to field instruments. An interface device that includes a built-in firewall, is communicatively coupled between the device manager of an industrial automation process control system and a network of field instruments. The interface device includes at least one processor configured to execute instructions that provides a firewall for the one or more field instruments by blocking one or more user selected commands from being sent to the field instruments from the device manager.

An apparatus is provided that uses the steps of providing a plurality of wireless sensor devices coupled to a controller in a security system configured into a wireless network where at least one is a child sensor device that communicates with the controller through at least first and second parent sensor devices, the child sensor device measuring an environmental parameter within the secured area and transmitting a message to the controller through the at least two parents, the message is transmitted during a first time period and on a first frequency to the first parent and a copy is transmitted during a second time period and on a second frequency to the second parent wherein the first and second times and first and second frequencies are all different and wherein the first and second time periods are directly adjacent to one another in time.

Interference avoidance technique for wireless networks used in critical applications

A firefighter tracking system is provided for use in conjunction with a fire truck to track firefighters at the scene of a fire. The system a plurality of portable wireless transceiver tags each carried by a respective firefighter, an accelerometer within each of the plurality of portable wireless transceiver tags, a motion processor within each of the plurality of portable wireless transceiver tags coupled to the accelerometer, the motion processor processes information from the accelerometer, detects an immobilized state of the respective firefighter and wirelessly transmits information including a notification of the detected immobilized state, a gateway carried by the fire truck that receives the transmitted information from each of the plurality of portable wireless transceivers and a status processor coupled to the gateway within the fire truck programmed to determine and display a status of at least some of the firefighters at the location of the fire via the received information including at least the immobilized state of the at least some of the firefighters.
