A handheld interface device configured to provide an electrostatic friction (ESF) effect is provided. The device comprises a plurality of more than two electrodes, with each electrode being separately disposed at a respective portion of an outer surface of the interface device. Each electrode is covered by or forms a respective portion of the outer surface of the handheld interface device. The device includes a control unit that is configured to determine a contact condition at each electrode of the plurality of electrodes, to select a subset of the plurality of electrodes based on the determined contact condition at each electrode of the plurality of electrodes, and to apply a drive signal for generating electrostatic friction to only one or more electrodes in the selected subset of the plurality of electrodes.

A haptic effect enabled system generates a haptic effect using an electric potential responsive fluid. A haptic enabled apparatus includes a fluid and a substrate. The fluid is responsive to an electric field. The substrate is at least partially flexible and defines a channel. The fluid is positioned within at least a portion of the channel. A portion of the substrate proximal to the fluid is stiffer than a portion of the substrate spaced from the fluid, thereby creating a haptic effect.

Haptic implants

An interface device configured to provide an electrostatic friction (ESF) effect is disclosed. The interface device comprises a plurality of electrodes disposed at a surface of the interface device. It further comprises a signal generating circuit configured to generate a first drive signal at an output of the signal generating circuit, and comprises a plurality of frequency filter units or delay elements electrically connected to the signal generating circuit and to the plurality of electrodes. The interface device further comprises a control unit configured to use the plurality of frequency filter units or delay elements: (i) to cause only a subset of one or more electrodes of the plurality of electrodes to output one or more respective ESF effects with the first drive signal, or (ii) to cause at least two electrodes to output respective ESF effects with the first drive signal in different respective manners.

Method and apparatus for controlling generation of electrostatic friction effects for a plurality of electrodes

A haptic enabled device that is configured to render one or more haptic effects is provided. The haptic enabled device includes an actuator and a plurality of user input elements. Each of the plurality of user input elements is configured to be selectively coupled to the actuator. In addition, the actuator is configured to be positioned to render the one or more haptic effects at each of the plurality of user input elements.

Single actuator haptic effects

A haptic actuator having a base structure, a beam rotatably attached to the base structure by an axial member, a first coil portion, and a second coil portion is presented. The beam has a first end that includes a first magnet with magnetic poles having a first polarity, and a second end that includes a second magnet with magnetic poles having a second, opposite polarity. The first coil portion and the second coil portion are configured to generate magnetic field lines. The magnetic poles of the first magnet and the magnetic poles of the second magnet are aligned to be parallel with a central axis of the first coil portion or the second coil portion when the beam is in an equilibrium position. The beam is configured to rotate via the axial member in response to electrical current being passed through the first coil portion or the second coil portion.
