A retrofit valve shutoff device is provided that comprises a coupling key for coupling with an actuator of a shutoff valve on a fluid supply line, an inertial measurement unit for generating one or more signals in response to arrival of seismic waves, a motor for rotating the coupling key and the actuator of the shutoff valve, and a processing unit for receiving the one or more signals from the inertial measurement unit, analyzing the received signals to determine whether to close the shutoff valve, and sending a signal to the motor to rotate the coupling key and the actuator of the shutoff valve to close the shutoff valve based on the analysis of the received signals.

Retrofit automatic seismic wave detector and valve shutoff device

A mask with at least one filtering layer that includes a fabric made of non-conductive polymer fibers embedded with nanoparticles of two different metals is provided. The population density of the nanoparticles of the two metals on the surface of non-conductive polymer fibers is configured such that the adjacent nanoparticles of the two metals have an average distance of two micrometers or less. The two different metals are selected such that the electric field intensity generated between the nanoparticles of the two different metal through the aerosol particle inactivates the microorganisms that may be inside the aerosol particle. When an aerosol particle comes into contact with the nanoparticles of the two metals, the aerosol acts as an electrolyte between the two metal types and a potential difference and an electric field is generated, through the aerosol particle, between the nanoparticles of the two metals.

A valve controller device for controlling a set of one or more solenoid valves is provided. The valve controller comprises an accelerometer for making acceleration measurements in three directions comprising acceleration measurements in a vertical direction. The valve controller comprises a processing unit that determines the arrival of seismic P-waves when the ratio of vibrations' power in the vertical direction with respect to a sum of the vibrations' power in the three directions exceeds a first threshold. The processing unit then determines the arrival of seismic S-waves when the vector sum of the vibrations' power in the three directions exceeds a second threshold. The processing unit then determines the arrival of seismic surface waves when the vector sum of the vibrations' power in the three directions exceeds a third threshold. The processing unit then sends one or more signals to close the set of solenoid valves.

Automatic seismic wave detector and valve controller

A belt apparatus is configured to support the trousers worn by a person and to include a number of airbags that are deployable in a falling event to protect the person from bone breakages. The belt apparatus includes a flexible belt element and a fastener that appear and function in much the same way as an ordinary apparel trouser belt, i.e., fitting through belt loops in trousers and being fastenable to itself to support the pair of trousers at the waist of the person. Despite the ordinary appearance of the belt apparatus, it includes airbags internal thereto whose expansion is controlled by a control apparatus. Responsive to a falling event in a particular direction with respect to the person, the control apparatus triggers the rapid expansion of an airbag that is situated on the belt element in the particular direction with respect to the person and takes other actions.

Protective belt apparatus

A macro electrically active mask includes two conductive layers separated by at least one filtering and insulating layer. The conductive layers are connected to each other by a power source. The power source includes an oscillator and a high voltage transformer. The power source generates a periodic voltage with a fundamental frequency and multiple harmonic frequencies. The power source is connected between the two conductive layers and the periodic voltage generates a periodic electric field between the two conductive layers. The fundamental frequency, the duty cycle, and the amplitude of the periodic voltage are configured to inactivate the microorganism that pass through the electric field.

Intelligent retrofit seismic wave detector and valve shutoff device

A novel concentrator system is described, which increases the efficiency of collecting sunlight energy and concentrates it on a target. This method uses an array of small movable reflective or refractive concentrator components that can move via a feedback mechanism which tracks the sun and concentrates the suns energy on to a second array of energy converting elements. In order to improve the effective collected energy, the array of concentrator elements is placed on a moving or tiltable flat slab (or dish, substrate, plane, plate, holder, tablet, or similar flat or non-flat surface) that tracks the sun. An alternative method uses an array of target elements or linear elements and a second array of concentrator elements in harmony such that and suns energy is efficiently redistributed by the reflective/reactive array on to the energy converting array as the sun's position in the sky (elevation and azimuth) changes. The elements of the reflective/refractive array are tilted by novel actuation mechanisms describe herein.

Multi-element concentrator system

A heterogeneous mix of traffic having one or more protocol formats and supplied by one or more users or sub-networks is transported in a communication network by using digital containers that are routed and processed in network nodes interconnecting the users or sub-networks. A digital container includes a frame structure comprising a header section and a payload section, the header section including information for routing the digital container and for identifying the type of payload being carried. The payload section is capable of carrying one or more different types of traffic formatted according to one or more protocols, e.g., IP, ATM, and so on. Processing of the individual payload remains a user or sub-network responsibility while the less processor-intensive routing and processing of digital containers occurs at the network node level.

Systems and method for transporting multiple protocol formats in a lightwave communication network

Station apparatus used at a Local Serving Office (LSO) and at one or more stations reduces contention for communication access over time slots and/or wavelengths and/or fibers of an optical facility. The station apparatus enables Space-Wavelength-Time Division Multiple Access (SWT-DMA) communications using a combination of two or more different communication modes selected from a group including (1) a space division multiplexed access (SDMA) mode which selects a fiber(s) of the optical facility, (2) a wavelength division multiplexed access (WDMA) mode which selects a wavelength(s) on a fibers, and (3) a time division multiplexed access (TDMA) mode which selects time slot(s) of a wavelength. Communication mode selection may utilize (1) out-of-band signaling, (2) optical tag signaling, or (3) time marker signaling over a wavelength of one or more of the optical fibers.

Space wavelength time-division multiple access optical transmission system

A method is provided for verifying that optical signals are properly routed between inputs and outputs of an optical cross-connect according to the prescribed routing paths defined in the cross-connect map. More specifically, optical signals are independently tagged at the cross-connect input ports with connection verification messages containing identification information. Connection verification messages can include, among other information, a message identification, incoming and outgoing wavelength information, incoming and outgoing port information, a time stamp, user verification data, and so on. At the cross-connect output ports, the messages are retrieved (and optionally removed) from the optical signals so that the identification information from the retrieved messages can be compared to the routing defined in the cross-connect map. If an optical signal is verified as not being routed according to the prescribed connection defined in the cross-connect map, then remedial action, such as tearing down the connection, can be initiated. By applying the tag to the optical signal, cross-connections can be verified in cross-connect applications employing one optical signal (i.e., wavelength) at each input and output port or applications employing a WDM signal having many optical channels of different wavelengths at each input and output port.

Connection verification in optical cross-connect arrangements

An optical internet router apparatus uses optical tags to send and receive command and response messages between routers of an optical network for establishing, maintaining or changing a packet data connection over the network between a source router and a destination router. The optical router comprises (1) optical tag apparatus for reading a message and writing a message modulated on one or more wavelengths which are used for communicating with another router of a network connection, the control message being modulated onto the one or more wavelengths using a secondary modulation scheme which is different from a primary modulation used to modulate packet data; and (2) a controller responsive to a received read message for controlling a network connection at this router, and for generating a network control message to be written by the optical tag apparatus, the generated message controlling a network connection to said another router.

Optical internet router

An optical signal access apparatus responds to variations in network traffic by dynamically assigning the number of wavelengths at originating and terminating optical signal access apparatus. A controller of an optical signal access apparatus monitors network traffic by checking the occupancy level (or other parameters) of data buffers and determines therefrom the number of optical signals that should be allocated to handle the network traffic from those buffers. When the optical signal access apparatus is part of a router it can be used to control traffic at the router as well as on the links between the routers of an optical network.
