A communication device () for dual mode muting operation includes a user interface () and a controller (). The controller () is programmed to: in response to a first user input to the user interface (), enable a first muting mode; and in response to a second user input to the user interface (), disable the first muting mode and enable a second muting mode. The first muting mode may be one of a full muting and a concealed muting, while the second muting mode may be the other one of a full muting and a concealed muting.

Communication device with dual-mode muting and method therefor

A communication unit (100) for operation in a communication system (600). The communication system (600) includes a plurality of communication units (100) and a control resource (300). The communication unit (100) includes a transmitter (118) for transmitting a signal to the control resource (300) requesting programming information using a bootstrap mode of operation. The communication unit (100) also includes a receiver (106) for receiving programming information sent by the control resource (300). The communication unit (100) further includes a controller (112) coupled to the transmitter (118) and the receiver (106) for programming the communication unit (100) using the received programming information prior to receiving authorization for using the communication unit.

Communication unit with over the air programming

A method and apparatus whereby a communication unit (10) transmits a first communication channel request signal at a first power level. If a communication link with a base site (12) is not established within a predetermined period, the communication unit transmits a second communication channel request signal at a second level which is higher than the level of the first communication channel request signal. This process may be continued for a predetermined number of times or until a communication link is established. Thus, the probability that a nearby base site, rather than a more distant base site, grants the communication channel is greatly enhanced.

Method and apparatus for establishing a communication link

Briefly, according to the invention, a multi-loop synthesizer (100) for producing an output signal (114) having minimum spurious components is described. The multi-loop synthesizer (100) includes a first synthesizer loop (116) which has a divider stage (108) and an oscillator stage (106) for providing an oscillator output signal (118). The multi-loop synthesizer (100) also includes at least one additional synthesizer loop (121) which also has an output for providing a loop output signal (120). The multi-loop synthesizer (100) further includes an image balanced mixer (110) coupled to the divider stage (108) of the first synthesizer loop for mixing the oscillator output signal (118) of the first synthesizer loop (116) with the loop output (120) of the at least one additional synthesizer loop (121).
