A system and method for hydraulic fracturing a subterranean formation with fracturing fluid to generate fractures, and intermittently adjusting a characteristic of the fracturing fluid conveying proppant to form pillars of proppant in the fractures.

Pillar fracturing

A first type of coupon holder includes an elongated core that is axially aligned with a coupon holder axis and an external surface that circumscribes the elongated core. The external surface defines coupon mounting surfaces with different radial orientations relative to the coupon holder axis. The coupon mounting surfaces are circumferentially aligned around the elongated core and have geometric centers with the same axial position along the coupon holder axis. A second type of coupon holder includes an elongated support structure that is axially aligned with a coupon holder axis and a coupon holder body positioned to have an end face in a plane transverse to the coupon holder axis. The coupon holder body has a plurality of slots to receive end portions of coupons. The slots are in a circular arrangement around the coupon holder axis and position coupons in parallel to the coupon holder axis.

Producing proppants with nanoparticle proppant coatings includes reacting nanoparticles with at least one of an alkoxysilane solution or a halosilane solution to form functionalized nanoparticles and coating proppant particles with unfunctionalized organic resin, a strengthening agent, and the functionalized nanoparticles to produce the nanoparticle coated proppant. The functionalized nanoparticles include nanoparticles having at least one attached omniphobic moiety including at least a fluoroalkyl-containing group including 1H, 1H, 2H, 2H-perfluorooctylsilane. The strengthening agent comprises at least one of carbon nanotubes, silica, alumina, mica, nanoclay, graphene, boron nitride nanotubes, vanadium pentoxide, zinc oxide, calcium carbonate, or zirconium oxide. Additionally, increasing a rate of hydrocarbon production from a subsurface formation through the use of the nanoparticle coated proppant includes producing a first rate of production of hydrocarbons from the subsurface formation, introducing a hydraulic fracturing fluid into the subsurface formation, and increasing hydrocarbon production by producing a second rate of production of hydrocarbons.

Methods of making nanoparticle coated proppants and use thereof

Systems and methods for determining mechanical properties of formation rock using, for example, millimeter-scale test samples of the formation rock are disclosed. The test samples may be single edge notched beam (SENB) test samples. The systems and methods may include performing laboratory testing on the SENB test samples and recording laboratory testing data obtained from the laboratory testing and performing a simulation on a numerical model of the SENB test samples and recording the simulation data obtained from the simulation. The laboratory testing data and the simulation data may be compared, and a determination may be made as to whether a selected degree of correlation is present between the laboratory testing data and the simulation exists. Mechanical properties of the formation rock are obtained from the simulation data when the selected degree of correlation exists between the laboratory testing data and the simulation data.

Systems and methods for determining mechanical properties of materials using SENB testing

A method of stimulating petroleum production includes introducing a fracturing fluid into a petroleum formation, thereby creating at least one fracture to stimulate the petroleum production. The fracturing fluid is introduced into the petroleum formation at a pressure above the breakdown pressure of the formation. The fracturing fluid includes a plurality of proppants each including a proppant particle and a coating. The coating includes a hydrophobic coating, a cross-linked hydrogel, or both. From 1 to 50 wt. % of the plurality of proppants includes micro proppants having a particle size ranging from 0.5 to 150 &#x3bc;m, and from 50 to 99 wt. % of the plurality of proppants includes macro proppants having a particle size of 100 mesh or greater.
