In systems and method of frequency band selection, a mobility and an application requirement of an application running on a wireless device are determined for a wireless device in communication with an access node over a first frequency band using a first radio access technology. When it is detecting that a signal level of the first frequency band meets a handover criteria, a message is sent to the wireless device comprising information of a second frequency band and a third frequency band, wherein the second and third frequency bands use a second radio access technology. The wireless device is instructed to communicate with the access node using one of the second and third frequency bands based on the determined mobility and application requirement.

In systems and methods of access node selection, signal level criteria and a signal quality criteria are provided, and a received signal level and a received signal quality are determined based on a signal from the access node to the wireless device. An application requirement is determined of an application running on the wireless device. Based on a comparison of the received signal level and the signal level criteria, a comparison of the received signal quality and the signal quality criteria, and the application requirement, the wireless device is instructed to perform an initial access procedure with the access node.

The processing system is configured to start a loading timer if first communication loading on a second carrier frequency of the wireless access node falls below a first loading threshold, and during the loading timer, compare second communication loading on hand down carriers of a highest priority neighbor to a second loading threshold, and if the second communication loading on at least one of the hand down carriers of the highest priority neighbor falls below the second loading threshold during the loading timer, then add a different channel PN code of the second carrier frequency of the wireless access node to the neighbor list for the wireless communication device.

A method of communication retransmission based on performance relative to an expected quality of service is presented. In the method, data packets associated with the expected quality of service are transmitted. The transmission performance associated with the transmission of the data packets is determined in relation to the expected quality of service. A maximum number of retransmissions for one of the data packets to be transmitted is selected based on the transmission performance. The one of the data packets is transmitted using the communication retransmission scheme limited by the selected maximum number of retransmissions.

Methods and systems for reducing the latency of instant communication session establishment are presented. According to various preferred embodiments, a RAN, may receive a setup request message via a packet-switched network. The RAN may determine, from a quality of service (QOS) indication contained in the setup request message, that the setup request message is requesting establishment of a instant communication session. The RAN may further determine an intended destination wireless communication device (WCD) for the setup request message. Based on the QOS indication and/or a profile indicating the destination WCD's capabilities, the RAN may pre-allocate resources for the instant communication session in parallel to paging the destination WCD. In this way, the latencies associated with these procedures are overlapped, thus reducing the overall latency of instant communication session establishment.

Methods and systems for improving session establishment with wireless communication devices

Disclosed herein is a method for selecting coverage areas as candidates for a handoff, and in particular, for a bidirectional handoff. An exemplary method may involve (a) engaging in a communication session via an access network, wherein an uplink connection is provided for uplink traffic in the communication session and a downlink connection is provided for downlink traffic in the communication session; (b) determining uplink-resource demand and downlink-resource demand of the communication session; (c) using the uplink-resource demand of the communication session as a basis for selecting one or more coverage areas in the access network as candidates for an uplink handoff of the uplink connection; and (d) using the downlink-resource demand of the communication session as a basis for selecting one or more coverage areas in the access network as candidates for a downlink handoff of the downlink connection.

A method is disclosed that can be carried out in an access network comprising a plurality of coverage areas, each coverage area being served by an RNC. The method involves making a determination that an access terminal is located in an inter-RNC boundary zone, and then, during a communication session: (i) determining that a handoff from a source coverage area to a target coverage area should be performed; (ii) determining whether or not the target coverage area is served by the same RNC as the source coverage area; (iii) if the target coverage area is not served by the same RNC as the source coverage area, delaying handoff until a current segment of the communication session is complete; and (iv) if the target coverage area is served by the same RNC, handing off the communication session to the target coverage area.

When a push-to-talk server receives a request for a push-to-talk call from an originating mobile station, the server sends a push-to-talk call notification to a destination mobile station identified in the request and starts a timer. Upon expiration of the timer the server determines whether the originating mobile station has a traffic channel for the push-to-talk call.

The communication interface is configured to receive first information for a first user. The processing system is configured to process the first information and select a first mode transition sequence for the first user, wherein the first mode transition sequence comprises an active mode to sleep mode to idle mode transition, and an idle mode to sleep mode to active mode transition. The communication interface is configured to receive second information for a second user. The communication interface is configured to receive third information for a third user. The communication interface is configured to transfer the first mode transition sequence to the first user for use by the first user, transfer the second mode transition sequence to the second user for use by the second user, and transfer the third mode transition sequence to the third user for use by the third user.
