The present invention provides a powdered or fibrous or granular or pelleted material, and a method for preparing the material, for measuring glucose concentration in a liquid sample. The devices are typically in the form of a chemically treated granular or powdered or fibrous or pelleted material. The granular or powdered or pelleted or fibrous material is treated with a reagent mixture or solution comprising an enzyme or enzymes, or a combination of an enzyme with a pigment or another compound, a chromogen, and neutralizer. The chromogen in the reagent solution changes color when the reagent solution is exposed to glucose.

Method of determining glucose concentration

The present invention provides self-disabling tamper evident gift cards, and methods for making and using the gift cards. The gift cards comprise a hidden lower level activation code, and an upper level activation code that is visible. The gift cards incorporate one or more features that render either the lower level or upper level, or both, activation codes unreadable once the lower level activation code is revealed. A method for measuring the radiant exposure of energy curable inks or coatings on a printing press. The steps for measuring comprise: a) providing an ink or coating material comprising a fluorescent probe; b) transferring the ink or coating material onto a substrate using a printing process; c) exposing the ink or coating material to actinic radiation capable of initiating cure of the ink or coating material that also alters the luminescence of the probe; d) exposing the ink or coating to a first source of excitation light with wavelength and luminance capable of absorption by the fluorescent probe; and e) measuring the emitted light from the fluorescent probe by a first detector.

Described herein are polymer-encapsulated materials and a method for encapsulating materials with polymer via emulsion polymerization. The encapsulated materials include colorants (e.g., pigments and dyes, and in particular fluorescent dyes), optical brighteners, downconverters and upconverters. The encapsulated materials are produced by the emulsion polymerization of ethylenically unsaturated monomers. The polymer-encapsulation method described herein does not require the preparation of a miniemulsion homogenized with special equipment, such as an ultrasonification device, and the resulting polymer-encapsulated materials exhibit optical properties superior to polymer-encapsulated materials prepared by processes that include the preparation of a miniemulsion prepared with such special equipment, such as an ultrasonification device.

A dispenser for dispensing a product, the dispenser comprising a base unit () into which a refill () containing the product is removably insertable in a fixed position. The refill has a taggant ink () on part of its external surface. The base has a light source () to illuminate the ink. The light source has a first wavelength and the ink is arranged to cause the ink to emit light at a second different wavelength. A sensor () receives light emitted by the ink upon illumination by the light source. A control circuit receives signal indicative of the wavelength of the detected light from the sensor, compares it with stored data, and prevents operation of a dispensing mechanism unless the refill is authentic.
