An ultra-wideband, large-current radiator consisting of a ground plane and two electric monopoles: a wide radiating monopole orthogonal to the ground plane, and a thin monopole orthogonal to the ground plane and normally displaced from the wide monopole. The frequency-independent low impedance of the antenna allows a small voltage to generate a large current. The wide radiating monopole may be a flat sheet, or a sheet of parallel bars. Shielding by the wide monopole suppresses radiation from the thin monopole into a sector of space into which the monopole radiation characteristic of a well-formed impulse in response to a voltage step is desired. In one preferred embodiment, two parallel flat sheets or a conducting cylinder is used as the wide radiating monopole, further shielding radiation from the thin monopole.

Ultra-wideband monopole large-current radiator

A compact dual narrow band microstrip antenna particularly suited for remote wireless metering includes a dielectric, a directly fed radiating element, a parasitic radiating element gap coupled to the directly fed radiating element and a truncated ground plane. Each radiating element is partially shorted to the ground plane and each radiating element has a reactance window to lengthen the current path. The reactance window and partial shorting reduce the size of the each radiating element. The antenna is compact with good isotropic characteristics and sensitivity to two perpendicular polarizations.

Compact dual narrow band microstrip antenna

An antenna structure includes a ground plane, a layer of dielectric material having a first surface overlying the ground plane and an opposing second surface, and an electrically conductive layer overlying the second opposing surface of the dielectric layer. The electrically conductive layer is differentiated into a plurality of antenna elements including a driven antenna element and first and second non-driven, parasitic antenna elements. Each of the elements has a shape of a parallelogram having parallel first edges of length L and parallel second edges of length W, wherein one of the first edges of the first parasitic element is disposed substantially along one of the first edges of the driven element at a gap width W , and wherein one of the first edges of the second parasitic element is disposed substantially along the opposite one of the first edges of the driven element at the gap width W . Each of the antenna elements includes means for shorting the electrically conductive layer to the ground plane at a region proximate to one of the second edges of the electrically conductive layer. Also, each of the antenna elements has a resonant frequency, wherein the resonant frequencies are varied from each other using only the means for shorting. The antenna structure further includes means for coupling radio frequency energy to the driven antenna element of the electrically conductive layer.

Compact broadband high efficiency microstrip antenna for wireless modems

A compact planar inverted F antenna suited for remote wireless metering includes a circuit element, a ground plane and a feed probe. The circuit element has a planar portion with a reactance window, and a narrowed tab that extends transverse to the planar portion and is connected to the ground plane. The reactance window and narrowed tab reduce the size of the circuit element. The feed probe is connected between the circuit element and the ground plane. The ground plane has conductive portions that are wrapped around a substrate to reduce the physical size of the ground plane. The length of the tab and thereby the distance between the planar portion and the ground plane is selected so that the feed probe is a radiating element. The antenna is compact with good isotropic characteristics and sensitivity to two perpendicular polarizations.
