A method of clay swelling inhibition includes contacting an aqueous drilling fluid with a subterranean geological formation. The aqueous drilling fluid includes an acrylic acid functionalized cellulose diacrylate carbon nanocomposite (AA-Cellulose-NC) material in an amount of 0.1 to 2 percent by weight (wt. %) of the aqueous drilling fluid. The AA-Cellulose-NC material is deposited on and binds to an inner surface of the subterranean geological formation to form a hydrophobic filter cake layer to reduce swelling of clay in the subterranean geological formation.

Clay swelling inhibition using acrylic acid functionalized cellulose diacrylate carbon nanocomposite

A method to measure acid diversion efficiency in rock samples. The method includes measuring a first porosity and a permeability of the rock samples. The method includes flooding a core region of the rock sample with a hydrochloric acid (HCl) system to create a wormhole, wherein during the flooding the HCl system penetrates from a first end of the rock sample to a second end of the rock sample to form the wormhole. The method includes measuring a second porosity, a pore size distribution, and a diffusion tortuosity of the rock samples with NMR. The method includes establishing a diversion index (DI) based off a ratio between the diffusion tortuosity in a first direction and the diffusion tortuosity in a second direction. The method includes determining the acid diversion efficiency based off the diversion index.

A method for carbon dioxide (CO) storage includes injecting a brine solution into a subterranean anhydrite-rich formation, then injecting carbon dioxide into the subterranean anhydrite-rich formation and reacting the carbon dioxide with the subterranean anhydrite-rich formation to form one or more minerals thereby sequestering the carbon dioxide in the subterranean anhydrite-rich formation. The temperature in the subterranean anhydrite-rich formation is from 300 Kelvin (K) to 365 K and the pressure in the subterranean anhydrite-rich formation is from 90 bar to 120 bar.

The method includes injecting hydrogen into a subterranean banded iron formation, including magnetite, hematite, and/or pyrite, where the hydrogen is mainly hydrogen (H) gas based on the total volume of the hydrogen. Further, the subterranean banded iron formation includes mainly magnetite, hematite, and/or pyrite based on a total weight of the subterranean banded iron formation, where the hydrogen is adsorbed on the magnetite, the hematite, and/or the pyrite. Further, the method includes injecting ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid into the subterranean banded iron formation to release the hydrogen from the magnetite, the hematite, and/or the pyrite.

Preventing the flow of soil grains into oil and gas wells is highly desirable for the protection of hydrocarbon production. Geotechnical engineering solutions addressing this issue may utilize enzyme-induced precipitation methods to consolidate and increase shear strength. Methods may comprise: providing a mixture comprising urea, a urease enzyme, calcium chloride, magnesium chloride, and a cellulose; contacting at least a portion of the mixture with at least a portion of a subterranean formation; and forming a biomineral precipitate within the subterranean formation. The biomineral precipitate, comprised of a carbonate mineral and an evaporite mineral, may consolidate particles within the subterranean formation to form a consolidated body.

A method of emulsion detection includes executing an oil production process from a volume of a formation. While executing the oil production process, conducting real-time spectral induced polarization (SIP) measurements of the volume of the formation to determine a real-time real conductivity value (RCV) of a matrix material in the volume of the formation.
