A system and method packetizes data by fragmenting, with processing circuitry, a data structure into a plurality of data fragments, each data fragment being included in a separate packet, and inserting, with processing circuitry, an offset indicator within each of the packets, each offset indicator indicating an amount of fragment data encapsulated within preceding packets. A system and method decodes packetized data that includes the offset indicator.

System and method for improving resilience in transmission of data fragments

A system includes a processor operable to identify each of a plurality of first video packets from a communication session with a first identifier designating that bandwidth is reserved on the network for the packet, and identify each of a plurality of second video packets from the communication session with a second identifier designating that bandwidth is not reserved on the network for the packet. The system further includes an interface operable to initiate transmission of the plurality of first video packets and the plurality of second video packets in the communication session.

Managing the bandwidth of a communication session

In one embodiment, a system and method include determining bandwidth of a link that connects a local modem to a remote router. A first percentage of the bandwidth is assigned to a first class of data and a second percentage of bandwidth is assigned to a second class of data. The remaining percentage of the bandwidth is assigned for nominal excess capacity. The flow of first class of data and second class of data are controlled to below respective percentages of the bandwidth.

In an example embodiment, an IP phone is connected to a network switch that has an established communications channel to a call control server. The network switch acts as a proxy for the phone exchanging registration information that in effect keeps the phone registered while the phone itself can go to sleep as defined by periods of the day, periods where the phone is unused, or presence, which can then wake-up quickly with assistance from the switch. If the switch is not able to act as proxy, the phone can switch from sleep mode to 'wake' up mode at predetermined intervals, such as every 30 seconds, in order to respond to keep alive packets from the call control server.
