The invention provides a method for enhancing the durability of a titanium dioxide material, the method including mixing citric acid and an alumina source with an aqueous slurry of titanium dioxide particles and water to form a mixture, the mixture having an acidic pH; and raising the pH of the mixture to a pH of no more than about 7.5 to form alumina-coated titanium dioxide particles. The invention also provides a pigmented plastic article including alumina-coated titanium dioxide particles prepared according to the invention dispersed in a polymer material.

Pigment with enhanced durability and plastic materials made therewith

A cost-effective process for loading particulate pigment into a polymer concentrate includes adding a basic pH aqueous solution having a water soluble organic salt to a milled particulate pigment to form an organic-coated particulate pigment. The pH of the basic aqueous solution is sufficiently basic that the water soluble organic salt remains in a salt form. Without a prior micronization step, the organic-coated particulate pigment is mixed with a polymer resin to form a polymer concentrate having from about 50% to about 87% by weight particulate pigment with dispersibility comparable to micronized organic-coated particulate pigment.

Non-micronized pigment for plastics application

A coated particulate solid composition includes a particulate inorganic solid having deposited on its surface a treatment oil comprising lipids. The particulate inorganic solid can include a base particle of titanium dioxide, zinc sulfide, zinc oxide, iron oxide, lead oxide, aluminum oxide, silicon dioxide, zirconium oxide and/or chromium oxide. The treatment oil is optionally a vegetable oil. The treatment oil containing lipids optionally contains glycerides such as triglycerides, and diglycerides, and can contain phospholipids. In one embodiment, the coated particulate solid composition includes particulate titanium dioxide, wherein the treatment oil provides increased bulk density, and enhanced dispersibility in plastic as well as improved lacing resistance.

In various embodiments, a pigment composition is provided comprising a base particle and a dispersing agent, the dispersing agent comprising a salt and/or ester of: (i) an amine, alcohol, and/or alkanol amine and (ii) a polyprotic acid, wherein the mole ratio of the amine, alcohol, and/or alkanol amine to the polyprotic acid is greater than 3:1. In various embodiments, the pigments have improved stability, hiding power, tint strength, and/or gloss.

This treatment, which uses certain organo-phosphoric acids and/or their salts, imparts improved physical and chemical qualities including lacing resistance, improved dispersion and decreased chemical reactivity when these treated pigments are incorporated into polymeric matrices.

The addition of the organophosphinic compounds of the present invention may flexibly be incorporated into known processes at varying points, and are preferably added downstream of any filtering steps or to a dry particulate inorganic solid.
