An acidic cleaning composition comprising at least 0.1 weight percent of at least one member selected from the group consisting of furan-carboxylic acid and derivatives thereof having the following formula I and tetrahydrofuran-carboxylic acid and derivatives thereof having the following formula II ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1, R.sub.2, R.sub.3 and R.sub.4 are hydrogen, --COOH, --CH.sub.3, --C.sub.2 H.sub.5 or --OH with the proviso that at least one of R.sub.1, R.sub.2, R.sub.3 and R.sub.4 is --COOH.

Acidic cleaning composition

An acidic cleaning composition comprising at least 0.1 weight percent of pyrrolidone-carboxylic acid or derivatives thereof having the following formula ##EQU1## wherein R.sub.1, R.sub.2 and R.sub.3 are hydrogen, --COOH, --CH.sub.3, --C.sub.2 H.sub.5 or --OH with the proviso that at least one of R.sub.1, R.sub.2 and R.sub.3 is --COOH, and R.sub.4 is hydrogen, --CH.sub.3 or --C.sub.2 H.sub.5.
