An exhaust by-pass system in an internal combustion engine provided with a turbocharger. The turbocharger is the so-called twin entry type having a pair of scroll passageways connected to two groups of cylinders of the engine, respectively. By-pass passageways are formed in a housing of the turbine of the turbocharger. The by-pass passageways are connected to scroll passageways, respectively at positions near their inlets. The by-pass passageways are opened or closed by a common by-pass control valve arranged in a tubular boss portion of the housing.

A lubricating oil sealing apparatus for use of a turbocharger having a compressor wheel for supplying a supercharged air through an intake passage, a turbine wheel driven by a force of an exhaust gas, and a driving shaft connecting the compressor wheel with the turbine wheel. The apparatus is located between the compressor wheel and turbine wheel, and has a labyrinth structure therein in order to prevent the lubricating oil from being suctioned into the intake passage.

In response to the occurrence of knocking in an internal combustion engine, the basic ignition timing is corrected in a direction to retard it through the charging and discharging of an integrator circuit. The integrated current output of the integrator circuit is varied in accordance with a voltage corresponding to the speed of the engine so as to limit the maximum amount of ignition timing retard at low speeds or high speeds of the engine.

An internal combustion engine comprising an intake duct and a turbocharger arranged in the intake duct. A primary throttle valve connected to the accelerator pedal is arranged in the intake duct located downstream of the turbocharger. A secondary throttle valve is arranged in the intake duct located downstream of the primary throttle valve. An auxiliary intake passage is branched off from the intake duct located between the primary and the secondary throttle valves and is connected to the intake passage located downstream of the secondary throttle valve. The secondary throttle valve is gradually closed from the full open position as the level of the vacuum or the positive pressure, which are produced in the intake duct located between the primary and the secondary throttle valves, is increased.
