A control method can stop motor operation reliably when a mirror rotator is mechanically locked at a driven end of the mirror rotator. The control method operates a motoraccording to battery voltage. The motoris operated with an operating time set and is stopped after a lapse of the set operating time, where the operating time is a time required for the motorto drive the mirror rotatorfrom the retracted position or the working position to the working position or the retracted position at which the mirror rotatoris locked by a stopper. The control method detects the battery voltage, and decreases the set operating time of the motorwhen the detected battery voltage is high or increases the set operating time of the motorwhen the detected battery voltage is low.

A back mirror comprising an automatic glare-proof function of the present invention includes a battery E , a daytime/nighttime deciding circuit for deciding whether the current time is daytime or nighttime, an integrating circuit , an electronic switch FET , a glare-proof/glare-non-proof deciding circuit for deciding whether an EC mirror is set to a glare-proof state or a glare-non-proof state, and a driving circuit for applying a DC voltage to the EC mirror . The daytime/nighttime deciding circuit is being constantly applied with a DC voltage from the battery E . When the daytime/nighttime deciding circuit has decided that the current time is daytime, the electronic switch FET is turned off, and when the daytime/nighttime deciding circuit has decided that the current time is nighttime, the electronic switch FET is turned on. Therefore, the voltage is applied to the glare-proof/glare-non-proof deciding circuit and the driving circuit only when a decision has been made that the current time is nighttime. Thereby, the power consumption of the battery E can be decreased.

The mirror angle does not change automatically to the reverse position when the reverse gear is selected merely to reverse a vehicle. An automatic antiglare mirror for a vehicle with its reflectivity being variably controlled by an electrochromic element includes a rear light detection circuit for detecting quantity of light in the rear of the vehicle, a coloration amount control circuit for controlling an amount of coloration the electrochromic element and a response speed control circuit for controlling response speed of the electrochromic element. The coloration amount control circuit performs control of the amount of coloration in such a manner that, when quantity of rear light is smaller, the amount of coloration of the electrochromic element is smaller whereas, when the quantity of rear light is larger, the amount of coloration of the electrochromic element is larger. The response speed control circuit performs control of the response speed in such a manner that, when the quantity of rear light is smaller, the response speed of the electrochromic element in a color imparting direction is lower whereas, when the quantity of rear light is larger, the response speed of the electrochromic element in the color imparting direction is higher.

In a device for driving an EC antiglare mirror in which reflectivity is variably controlled by an EC element, a surrounding light quantity detection circuit detects quantity of light surrounding a vehicle. A rear light quantity detection circuit detects quantity of light in the rear of the vehicle. An oscillation circuit is constructed so that duration of an 'H' level of an oscillation signal and duration of an 'L' level of the oscillation signal are individually controlled. An inversion period control circuit variably controls duration of one of the 'H' and 'L' levels of the oscillation signal generated by the oscillation circuit in response to light quantity detected by the surrounding light quantity detection circuit and also variably controls duration of the other level in response to light quantity detected by the rear light quantity detection circuit. An EC element drive circuit inverts, in accordance with the level of the oscillation signal, the polarity of drive voltage supplied from a drive power source and applies the inverted voltage to the EC element and thereby controls the amount of coloration in accordance with duty factor of the oscillation signal.
