There is provided a modified ethylene resin produced by subjecting (a) an ethylene resin to modification with (b) an .alpha.,.beta.-unsaturated carboxylic ester having a hydrocarbon-terminated polyalkylene oxide chain, and with (c) an aromatic vinyl compound and/or (d) an ester of an .alpha.,.beta.-unsaturated carboxylic acid with an aliphatic alcohol. There is also provided an ethylene resin composition comprising: (A) 80 to 99.9% by weight of a modified ethylene resin produced by subjecting (a) an ethylene resin to modification at least with (b) an .alpha.,.beta.-unsaturated carboxylic ester having a polyalkylene oxide chain; and (B) 20 to 0.1% by weight of a surfactant.

An aminated polymer having excellent adhesion, printability, and compatibility in polymer blends or the like which are obtained by introducing an amino group, into an isotactic .alpha.-olefin polymer having an olefinic unsaturated bond at its terminus is disclosed. The terminal unsaturated isotactic or syndiotactic .alpha.-olefin polymer is obtained by polymerizing an .alpha.-olefin with a catalyst comprising the combination of a metallocene compound and an alumoxane, and the amino group is obtained by the amination of the terminal unsaturated group, by the addition of a compound containing the corresponding functional group to the unsaturated bond, or by the conversion of a precursor polymer containing a precursor of the functional group into a polymer containing the functional group desired.

A method for producing a graft-modified copolymer comprising the step of subjecting 100 parts by weight of an unsaturated copolymer comprising an .alpha.-olefin of 3 to 12 carbon atoms and a cyclic olefin represented by the following formula (I), and 0.1 to 300 parts by weight of a radically polymerizable monomer to the radical polymerization conditions: ##STR1## wherein R.sup.1 is a C.sub.2-5 alkylidene group or a C.sub.2-5 alkenyl group, R.sup.2 is a C.sub.1-5 hydrocarbon radical or H, and n is 0, 1 or 2. The graft-modified copolymer is imparted with various properties which are attributed to the polymer chain formed from the radically polymerizable monomer, without the excellent properties inherent in an .alpha.-olefin polymer being impaired. The copolymer is excellent in compatibility with other resins.

A functionalized polymer having excellent adhesion, printability, and compatibility in polymer blends or the like which are obtained by introducing an epoxy group, a hydroxyl group or a sulfonic group into a syndiotactic .alpha.-olefin polymer having an olefinic unsaturated bond at its terminus is disclosed. The terminal unsaturated syndiotactic .alpha.-olefin polymer is obtained by polymerizing an .alpha.-olefin with a catalyst comprising the combination of a metallocene compound and an alumoxane, and the functional groups are obtained by the oxidation, sulfonation or the like of the terminal unsaturated group, by the addition of a compound containing the corresponding functional group to the unsaturated bond, or by the conversion of a precursor polymer containing a precursor of the functional group into a polymer containing the functional group desired.

Disclosed are processes for preparing a process for preparing a modified polyphenylene ether which comprises reacting any one of a borane compound having at least one boron-hydrogen bond, an .alpha.,.beta.-unsaturated carbonyl compound or a mercaptane having a carbonyl group, a hydroxyl group or an alkoxysilyl group with a polyphenylene ether having a carbon-carbon unsaturated bond in a substituent, and optionally oxidizing the resulting borane-modified PPE under alkaline conditions.

An aromatic polythioetherimide is disclosed, which comprises at least 50 mol % of a repeating unit represented by formula (I): ##STR1## wherein Ar is as defined in the specification, with the total of the repeating unit(s) being 100 mol %. The polythioetherimide has an excellent balance between heat resistance and mechanical properties as well as improved moldability.

Aromatic polythioetherimide

An optical resin consisting essentially of a radical polymerization polymer of an ethylenically unsaturated monomer, characterized in that at least a major part of the ethlenically unsaturated monomer is an ester of 1 mole of tricyclo[5,2,1,0.sup.2,6 ]decanedimethanol with 2 moles of a mixture of acrylic acid and metharcylic acid. Because the resin is a polymer obtained from the restricted monomer as specified above, the resin possesses high thermal resistance and high heat stability as well as low hygroscopic property. Dimethanol compounds from higher Diels-Alder adducts of cyclopentadine are also used in place of the tricyclo [5,2,1,0.sup.2,6 ]decanedimthanol which is a Diels-Alder adduct of two moles of cyclopentadiene.
