A defect inspection device configured to measure a surface shape of an inspection target using light applied to the inspection target via a spatial light phase modulator based on an interference state of reflected light from the inspection target obtained via the spatial light phase modulator, to measure magnetic field distribution of a surface of the inspection target magnetized by an excitation device for magnetizing the inspection target using light applied to the inspection target via the spatial light phase modulator based on an interference state of reflected light from the inspection target obtained via the spatial light phase modulator, and to separate data of a magnetic field specific portion which exists on the surface of the inspection target from magnetic field distribution data which is a measurement result of magnetic field distribution of the inspection target based on surface shape data which is a measurement result of the surface shape of the inspection target, to suppress deterioration of measurement accuracy of magnetic field distribution generated by the surface shape of the inspection target and to improve defect detection accuracy.

An image photography play method which is suited to playing a stereoscopic video. The image photography method includes: a step of forming a hologram pattern from a reference light and a subject light; a step of digitally processing the obtained hologram pattern; a step of writing the digitized hologram pattern as a magnetized vector pattern to a spatial lighting modulator which is formed from a magneto-optical material; and a step of inputting linearly polarized light into the spatial lighting modulator and playing an image according to the digitized hologram pattern.

Provided is an optical body capable of arbitrarily and quickly controlling the optical characteristics of incident light. A refractive index variable layer () formed of PLZT or other material and a magneto-optical material layer () formed of garnet or other material are provided side by side between a first reflective layer () and a second reflective layer (). If linearly polarized light is made incident from the side of the first reflective layer (), the incident light interacts with the magneto-optical material layer () and is converted into a right-circularly polarized light component and a left-circularly polarized light component. A very small retardation occurring between both the right- and left-circularly polarized light components is amplified through multiple reflections between the pair of reflective layers () and is controlled according to a controlled refractive index of the refractive index variable layer ().

A three-dimensional image projector includes: a conversion optical system including a plate-shaped first optical member that has an incidence surface is incident, and an emission surface and that converts a traveling direction of the image light so as to form a predetermined angle between the emission surface and an emission direction of the image light on the emission surface; a rotary driving unit that drives the conversion optical system so as to rotate along the emission surface with a predetermined point on the emission surface as the center of rotation; and an image projection unit that is erected along a rotation axis, converts the traveling direction of the image light emitted from the conversion optical system into a first direction along a surface crossing the rotation axis, and diffuses the image light emitted from the conversion optical system in a second direction along the rotation axis.

A composition for holographic recording medium, which can be coated in a uniform thickness and enables to simply produce a high definition holographic recording medium is provided. And a holographic medium having a low error rate, high storage capacity, high-performance, high-density, which is produced using the composition for the holographic recording medium, is also provided. The composition comprises a (meth)acrylic acid ester group-containing polymerizable substance, an alicyclic epoxy group-containing cationical polymerizable substance of which is ring-opening polymerized by heat, and a hydroxyl group-containing substance which is reactive with the alicyclic epoxy group-containing cationical polymerizable substance. The holographic recording medium is produced by forming a holographic recording layer on a substrate by applying the composition on the base material and polymerizing the alicyclic epoxy group-containing cationical polymerizable substance and the hydroxyl group-containing substance.

An object of the present invention is to make it possible to record information on an optical information recording medium in the form of three dimensional interference patterns so that the information is erasable in part. The optical information recording medium () has an information recording layer () made of a magneto-optic recording material. A pick-up () of an optical information recording/reproducing apparatus generates information light by spatially modulating laser light emitted from a light source unit () with a spatial light modulator (), and generates recording-specific reference light spatially modulated in phase by spatially modulating the phase of the laser light emitted from the light source () with a phase-spatial light modulator (). The information recording layer () of the optical information recording medium () is irradiated with the information light and the recording-specific reference light. An electromagnetic coil () applies a magnetic field to the information recording layer (). A three-dimensional distribution pattern of magnetization corresponding to the interference pattern resulting from the information light and the recording-specific reference light is formed in the information recording layer ().

A Faraday rotator of multilayer film type is provided which can achieve excellent optical characteristics with a reduced number of layers. In the Faraday rotator, a metal reflection film, a periodic dielectric multilayer film made of silicon dioxide SiOand tantalum pentoxide TaO, a magneto-optical thin film, and another periodic dielectric multilayer film made of tantalum pentoxide TaOand silicon dioxide SiOis formed sequentially. Light incident on a polarizer goes therethrough, is reflected at the metal reflection film while traveling trough the periodic dielectric multilayer films, and goes through an analyzer to exit out.

An optic switch for cross-connecting input light signals incoming from inlet fiber cables to outlet fiber cables is disclosed that makes use of a holographic filter () having a series of preformed different speckle patterns, each in the form of a hologram (H, H, . . . ). Associated with input light signals guided past respective inlet passages (in) of a multimode waveguide (), different speckle patterns are formed by applying different control voltages across respective electrode pairs () provided thereon. These speckle patterns past a single outlet passage (out) of the multimode waveguide () into which the inlet passages (in) converge are joined together and enter the holographic filter () in which an input light signal is selectively switched, addressed and cross-connected to an outlet waveguide () through a region thereof where a formed speckle pattern coincides with a preformed speckle pattern. The multi mode waveguides () is formed in, e.g., a LiNbOphotorefractive substrate ().

A spatial light modulator includes: a magnetic layer that is made of a magneto-optic material and includes a plurality of pixels in each of which a magnetization direction is independently set and each of which has a function of causing a rotation of a polarization direction of incident light depending on the magnetization direction by a magneto-optic effect; a plurality of first conductor layers and a plurality of second conductor layers arranged to intersect with each other at positions corresponding to the individual pixels, through which currents for generating magnetic fields to set the magnetization directions in the individual pixels are passed; and a plurality of dielectric layers for enhancing the function of the pixels. A polarization direction of light incident on the spatial light modulator is rotated depending on the magnetization direction of each pixel.

Spatial light modulator

A spatial light modulator includes a device portion and a bias field applying coil disposed around the device portion. The device portion includes a magnetic layer and two types of conductor layers. The magnetic layer is made of a magneto-optic material and includes a plurality of pixels whose directions of magnetization are set independently of one another. Each of the pixels causes rotation of a direction of polarization of incident light depending on its direction of magnetization due to a magneto-optic effect. The conductor layers generate a magnetic field for setting the direction of magnetization of each of the pixels of the magnetic layer. The magnetic layer has grooves for defining the borders of the individual pixels. The grooves are formed to extend from the top surface of the magnetic layer to a predetermined position between the top and bottom surfaces of the magnetic layer.

A Faraday rotator of multilayer film type is provided in which satisfactory optical characteristics are obtained with a small number of layers. In the Faraday rotator, a first periodic dielectric multilayer film made of silicon dioxide SiO and tantalum pentaoxide Ta O is formed on a substrate, then a magneto-optical thin film, and a second periodic dielectric multilayer film made of tantalum pentaoxide Ta O and silicon dioxide SiO are formed sequentially. The first and second periodic dielectric multilayer films sandwich the magneto-optical thin film such that their respective higher refractive dielectric thin films are in contact with the magneto-optical thin film. The number of layers of the first periodic dielectric multilayer film is larger than that of the second periodic dielectric multilayer film.

Each of the pixels includes two regions which can take different states of magnetization. Information is produced by changing the states of magnetization in those regions.

This invention provides a magnetic optical member that can obtain a large magneto-optical effect using a rare-earth iron-garnet-based material and a method of producing the same.
