A plasma display which can reduce the cost of a heat dissipating structure for a driver IC. A magnesium oxide layer is formed on a surface in contact with a discharge space in each of display cells of a PDP. The magnesium oxide film includes magnesium oxide crystals which are excited by electron beams irradiated thereto to emit cathode luminescence light having a peak in a wavelength range of 200 to 300 nm. Further, a pixel data pulse generator circuit for applying column electrodes with pixel data pulses in accordance with pixel data is divided into and built in a plurality of IC chips. Each of these IC chips is mounted on one of a plurality of flexible wiring boards which are connected to the power supply line and column electrodes, respectively.

Plasma display device

In order to provide a method for driving a display panel capable of improving durability of a driving device for driving a display panel, when a scan pulse is applied in superposition with a base pulse to one of row electrodes of one row electrode pair among row electrode pairs while the base pulse is applied to one of the row electrodes of all the row electrode pairs in the display panel and a pixel data pulse corresponding to an image signal is applied to the row electrode at the same timing as that of the scan pulse to set discharge cells to either one of a light-on mode and a light-off mode, a change ratio of a voltage value in a fall period in the base pulse is smaller than a change ratio of a voltage value in a fall period in the scan pulse.

Method for driving a display panel

A display panel includes a plurality of unit light emission areas (light emission elements) arranged in a matrix. Each unit light emission area is defined by a first discharge cell and a second discharge cell. The second discharge cell has a light-absorbing layer. When the display panel is driven to express an image having a plurality of gradation levels, address discharge is selectively caused in the second discharge cells in accordance with an input image signal. Light leaks to the first discharge cell from the second discharge cell upon the address discharge. This light is used to express the gradation of low luminance. Since luminance difference between gradation levels of a low luminance image is reduced, it is possible to display a high quality, low luminance image.

Method of driving a display panel

A display and a driving method of a display panel capable of improving a dark contrast. In driving the display panel having light-emission areas formed at each intersection of a plurality of pairs of row electrodes and a plurality of column electrodes, each of the light-emission areas having a first discharge cell including a portion where the respective row electrodes in pair are opposed to each other with a predetermined discharge gap within a discharge space and a second discharge cell including a portion where a light absorptive layer is provided and one row electrode of the row electrode pair and the other row electrode of the row electrode pair adjacent to this row electrode pair are opposed to each other with a predetermined discharge gap, an address discharge is produced within the second discharge cell, to set the second discharge cell at a light-on state or a light-off state, by applying a pixel data pulse based on an input image signal, to respective column electrodes, while applying a scanning pulse to a row electrode having the longer distance to the first discharge cell, of the respective row electrodes within the second discharge cell. This structure causes the address discharge within the second discharge cell relatively distant from the first discharge cell, so that the amount of a ultraviolet ray by the address discharge flowing into the first discharge cell is reduced, to suppress the deterioration of the dark contrast.

Display and display panel driving method

A plasma display panel capable of improving dark contrast. A unit light emission region is comprised of a display discharge cell in which a discharge is produced between portions of row electrodes X, Y of each row electrode pair (X, Y) opposing each other, and a reset and address discharge cell arranged in parallel with the display discharge cell, in which a discharge is produced between portions of the row electrode Y and a row electrode X of another adjacent row electrode pair (X, Y). The display discharge cell and reset and address discharge cell are communicated with each other. A light absorbing layer is formed in a portion of the reset and address discharge cell opposing the display surface. According to another aspect, the unit light emission region in the display panel comprises a first discharge cell and a second discharge cell comprising a light absorbing layer. A sustain discharge for emitting light for displaying an image is produced in the first discharge cell, while a variety of control discharges causing light emission not associated with a displayed image are produced in the second discharge cell. According to a further aspect, unit light emission regions are formed at intersections of each of a plurality of first row electrodes and second row electrodes alternately formed on the front substrate such that the first row electrode and the second electrode in each pair are arranged in a reverse order to the preceding pair, and each of a plurality of column electrodes.

Display device having unit light emission region with discharge cells and corresponding driving method

A plasma display panel driving method and a plasma display apparatus which can reduce power consumption. A selective discharge is generated at least once for selectively setting each of discharge cells of a plasma display panel either to a lit discharge cell state or to an unlit discharge cell state in accordance with a video signal. In this case, the number of times the selective discharge is generated is changed in accordance with the power consumption associated with the selective discharge.

Plasma display panel driving method and plasma display apparatus

A method for driving a PDP which can realize higher image quality and lower costs and a plasma display apparatus therefor are provided. A pulse having an interval during which a pulse voltage changes gradually and another interval during which the pulse voltage changes steeply is generated as a reset pulse applied for allowing a discharge cell of the PDP to reset-discharge. In this instance, in the interval during which the pulse voltage changes gradually, a voltage applied to the discharge cell is allowed to reach a minimum reset-discharge starting voltage.

Method for driving a plasma display panel and a plasma display apparatus therefor

A driving apparatus of a plasma display panel performs allows image display in a desired way. When discharge cells are driven to repetitively execute a sustain-discharge by the application of sustaining pulses to row electrodes the number of times corresponding to subfields, a ratio of changes of a voltage value in a trailing interval of the last sustaining pulse among those sustaining pulses is set to be milder than that of a voltage value in a trailing interval of the sustaining pulse which is applied just before the last sustaining pulse. Further, description has been made for a driving method of a plasma display panel which can perform an image display of high quality by performing a proper selective discharge while preventing an erroneous discharge of the discharge cells in a pixel data writing step. A trailing edge portion of the sustaining pulse which is applied finally among the sustaining pulses applied in a light emission sustaining step has an undershoot part below a ground potential.

Method and apparatus for driving a plasma display panel

In a plasma display having a charge recovery type of pulse generator for generating a driving pulse, the charge recovery type of pulse generator is prevented from short-circuiting due to a malfunction of a switch controller in a driving apparatus. A protection gate circuit is provided between the charge recovery type of pulse generator and the switch controller to block an undesirable signal generated due to a malfunction of switch controller for turning on an undesirable switch.

Driving apparatus for plasma display panel

Disclosed is a driving apparatus for a plasma display panel comprising a group of pairs of row electrodes divided into a plurality of sub-blocks, and a driving pulse generator provided in each sub-block for supplying a driving pulse to the associated sub-block, thereby eliminating non-uniform luminance distribution on the display surface due to variations in voltage of pulses supplied to row electrode in the respective sub-blocks. Output terminals of the pulse generators in the respective sub-blocks are connected to each other to make the voltage levels of at least sustain pulses constant.

A driving apparatus of a plasma display panel which can apply a plurality of driving pulses of different polarities onto same row electrodes of the PDP by a transistor of a low withstanding voltage. The apparatus has a first pulse generating circuit for generating a first pulse of a predetermined polarity and applying it to a first line and a second pulse generating circuit for generating a second pulse of a polarity different from the predetermined polarity and applying it to the row electrodes of the plasma display panel. A switching device which is turned on for at least a period of time when the first pulse generating circuit generates the first pulse and connects the first line and the row electrodes is provided between the first and second pulse generating circuits.

Driving apparatus of plasma display panel

A plasma display apparatus capable of easily implementing stable image display. In generating a priming pulse and a scan pulse by alternately applying the potentials of the positive terminal and negative terminal of a first voltage supply for generating a DC voltage, to row electrodes, the potential of the positive terminal of a second voltage supply with a grounded negative terminal for generating a DC voltage smaller than a voltage of the first voltage supply is applied to the positive terminal of the first voltage supply, thereby shifting the potential of the negative terminal of the first voltage supply on a negative side.
