A display apparatus includes a field emission device including a first electrode serving as a display plate on which phosphor material is coated, and a second and a third electrode for emitting electrons to be ejected onto the first electrode, wherein the phosphor material emits light when the electrons are ejected thereonto; a voltage application unit for applying driving voltages to the second and the third electrode to control an emitted amount of the electrons in accordance with display data and allow a specific part of the phosphor material to emit light; and a brightness control unit for controlling an emission brightness of the phosphor material. The brightness control unit includes a first electrode current detection unit, a display data amount estimation unit, a comparing unit, a preset value generation unit, an average turn-on rate detection unit, an average turn-on rate analysis unit, and a selection unit.

Display apparatus employing a field emission device and brightness control device and method therefor

A field emission element includes a substrate, a cathode conductor disposed on the substrate, an insulating layer structure on the cathode conductor that has a first insulating layer on the cathode conductor and a second insulating layer on the first insulating layer, a gate disposed on the second insulating layer, a gate hole provided through the gate and the insulating layer structure to expose a portion of the cathode conductor therethrough, and an emitter on the exposed portion of the cathode conductor in the gate hole. The first insulating layer is covered by the second insulating layer at a side surface of the gate hole and a dielectric constant of the first insulating layer is different from that of the second insulating layer.

Field emission element and method for manufacturing the same

A field emission image display is provided that can obtain a suitable white balance even when the luminous brightness of fluorescent substances is different. When an image is displayed on a field emission display (FED) panel based on input image data, correction data for correcting image data for each color is previously stored into the look-up table,to set properly the white balance in each gray scale of a display image to be displayed on the FED panel. The white balance of a display image to be displayed on the FED panel is nearly maintained to a constant value by correcting image data to be input using the correction data stored in the look-up table

Field emission image display

A field emission image display that can provide color blur-free, high brightness, high resolution images is provided. Patchlike cathode electrodes are connected in a zigzag pattern with cathode lead-out electrodes. Plural patchlike gate electrode pairs arranged in the row direction in two lines of patchlike gate electrodes adjacent to each gate lead-out electrode are connected to the gate lead-out electrode every other row. The right neighbor patchlike gate electrode and the left neighbor patchlike gate electrode with respect to the patchlike gate electrodes to be driven are set to a low potential. At the same time, the anode electrode area immediately above the driven patchlike gate electrode is driven. Anode electrodes neighbor to the driven anode electrode are set to a low potential.

Field emission image display and method of driving the same

In a field emission type image display panel, plural cathode electrodes are formed in a stripe shape on a first substrate and each having emitters for field emission. Cathode lead-out electrodes supply signals to the cathode electrodes. Plural patch-like gate electrodes are arranged in a matrix form over the plural cathode electrodes and insulated from the plural cathode electrodes. Gate lead-out electrodes are led out along spaces between adjacent two rows in rows formed of patch-like gate electrodes substantially perpendicular to the cathode electrodes, each of the gate lead-out electrodes being connected to the patch-like gate electrodes in adjacent two rows in a zigzag arrangement and every other gate electrode. A second substrate is spaced from the first substrate a predetermined distance apart. Plural patch-like anode electrodes are arranged on the second substrate, the plural anode electrodes respectively confronting the plural patch-like gate electrodes in a matrix form. Fluorescent materials are formed over the plural patch-like anode electrodes, for displaying an image. Anode electrodes are led out along spaces between adjacent two rows of anode electrodes substantially perpendicular to the cathode electrodes, each of the anode lead-out electrodes being connected to anode electrodes in adjacent two rows in a zigzag arrangement and every other anode electrode.

Field emission type image display panel and method of driving the same

A unit for driving an image display device capable of preventing occurrence of luminescent spots on a display plane due to a leakage voltage of the unit. The drive unit includes gate electrodes and cathode electrodes arranged so as to define a matrix by cooperation with each other. At least two reset pulses are applied to each of the gate electrodes during a period of time for which it is kept nonselected to cause a voltage increased due to the leakage voltage to be reduced to a level of a reference potential and the gate electrode is kept at an increased impedance during a period of time for which the gate electrode is kept from being fed with the reset pulses.

Method for driving image display device and unit therefor

A field emission display for reducing luminance unevenness by construction means. A plurality of stripe shaped cathode wirings 102 are formed in the cathode area 109 on a cathode substrate 101. Cut-through sections 108 are formed in each of the cathode wirings 102 and an island-like electrode 107 is formed within each cut-through section 108. A resistance layer 103 is formed on the cathode wiring 102, the cut-through section 108 and the island-like electrode 107. A plurality of emitter cones 106 are formed on the resistance layer 103 so as to provide a field emission array. The distance between the island-like electrode 107 and the cathode wiring 102 is changed depending on the position thereof in the cathode area 109 so as to correct deviation of the emission characteristic depending on the position. In the case of a full-color field emission display, white balance can be corrected by changing the distance depending on the luminous color of each dot.

Field emission display

A field emission type display device capable of preventing a variation in luminance of the display device due to a variation in ambient temperature. A resistive layer is formed on cathode electrodes arranged in a display region and conical emitters are arranged on the resistive layer. The resistive layer is made of a semiconductor material, resulting in being varied in resistance depending on a temperature. A monitor resistive pattern made of the same material as the resistive layer is arranged so as to measure the resistance variation in the form of a voltage variation through an OP amplifier 11, which is then fed to the control circuit. The control circuit controls a gate voltage depending on the resistance to prevent a variation in luminance of the display device.

Field emission type display device and method for driving same

In a field emission type device, pairs of patch-shaped cathode electrodes 3 are disposed on each of cathode electrodes 2 with an insulation in the line direction. Even-numbered patch-shaped gate electrodes 3 are connected to a first gate lead electrode GT1 on a line perpendicular to the cathode electrodes 2. Odd-numbered patch-shaped gate electrodes are connected to a second gate lead electrode GT2. An anode electrode 8 with a phosphor is disposed opposite to the patch-shaped gate electrodes 3. The first gate lead electrode GT1 and the second gate lead electrode GT2 are alternatively driven. The voltage of one of the first gate lead electrode GT1 and the second gate lead electrode GT2 is set to a ground level. Image data is supplied to cathode lead electrodes Cl to Ck. The voltage of the patch-shaped gate electrodes disposed adjacent to a patch-shaped gate electrode 3 that is driven is set to the ground level. Thus, electrons emitted are focused.

Field emission type device, field emission type image displaying

A drive circuit for an image display device capable of permitting anode lead-out wires to be led out without using a three-dimensional wiring structure and an image free of color bleeding to be displayed. Two-divided first and second anode electrodes are arranged opposite to stripe-like gate electrodes and are alternately driven. During driving of the first anode electrodes, cathode electrodes are scanned and only gate electrodes opposite to the anode electrodes are fed with image data. Then, the second anode electrodes are driven and scanning is likewise carried out. Thus, an image for one frame is displayed. Electrodes arranged on both sides of each of the anode electrodes and gate electrodes in a manner to be adjacent thereto have a potential kept at a ground level.

Drive circuit for image display device

A field emission cathode capable of permitting a voltage required for starting emission of electrons from the emitters to be decreased and the emission to be rendered uniform. The field emission cathode includes cathode electrodes formed on a substrate. On each of the cathode electrodes are arranged a plurality of emitters through diodes each acting as a constant-current element, and gate electrodes are arranged above the emitters. Arrangement of the diodes between the emitters and the cathode electrode permits a drive voltage to be reduced as compared with arrangement of a resistive layer therebetween, because a diode is generally decreased in voltage drop as compared with the resistive layer. Also, the arrangement renders emission of electrons from each of the emitters uniform.
