A liquid crystal display apparatus is provided in which light leakage from a peripheral portion of a non-selected pixel can be suppressed without reducing the aperture ratio of each pixel, and the contrast can be improved. A liquid crystal display apparatusincludes: first and second transparent substratesandwhich are opposed to each other to be placed through a predetermined gap; a liquid crystal layerwhich is placed between opposed surfaces of the first and second transparent substratesand; first strip-like transparent electrodeswhich are formed in a stripe-like pattern on a surface of the first transparent substratethat is opposed to the second transparent substrate; a transparent resin filmwhich is a transparent resin covering film that is formed after a stripe-like black maskis formed in a direction perpendicular to the first strip-like transparent electrodes, on a surface of the second transparent substratethat is opposed to the first transparent substrate, the resin film having inverted trapezoidal recessed portionsin the film surface corresponding to gaps of the black mask; and second strip-like transparent electrodeswhich are formed in the recessed portionsof the resin film, and which have an inverted trapezoidal shape.

Liquid crystal display device and method for manufacturing transparent electrode

A vertically aligned liquid crystal display device is provided in which the phase difference value is increased be-yond a usual range, whereby the ON transmittance in high duty driving is increased to improve the contrast and the viewing angle. In the vertically aligned liquid crystal display device, the phase difference value in the thickness direction of the liquid crystal layeris set in a range of from 500 nm to 1,600 nm, and a first phase difference plateis inserted between the first and second polarizing platesin which the absorption axesandper-pendicularly intersect with each other. The first phase difference plateis a uniaxial phase difference plate which has a negative refractive index anisotropy, in which the phase difference value in the thickness direction is set in a range of from 220 nm to 1,320 nm, and which has the optical axis perpendicular to first and second glass substratesbetween which a liquid crystal layeris interposed.

Vertically aligned liquid crystal display device

A TN type liquid crystal cell is interposed between a pair of polarization plates. First and second retardation films each having slow axes orthogonal to each other are disposed between one of the polarization plates and the liquid crystal cell. The product .DELTA.n.sub.1 .times.d.sub.1 of the refractive index anisotropy .DELTA.n.sub.1 and the thickness d.sub.1 of the first retardation film on the side of one of the polarization plates is set to a value greater than the product .DELTA.n.sub.2 .times.d.sub.2 of the refractive index anisotropy .DELTA.n.sub.2 and the thickness d.sub.2 of the second retardation film. The viewing angle of the liquid crystal display panel in the left-right direction is expanded by this arrangement.
