In an EL element including a light emitting layer sandwiched between upper and lower electrodes, of light emitted therefrom, light totally reflected at a light emitting layer interface is not taken out, so there is a problem in that light emission efficiency reduces. Therefore, a light scattering layer in which metal particles are dispersed is provided between an electrode and the light emitting layer. According to such a structure, the light from the light emitting layer can be scattered by the metal particles and taken out, thereby improving the light emission efficiency. When plasmon is excited in the metal particles, light confined in the light emitting layer or each layer adjacent thereto can be used, thereby improving light use efficiency.

This invention allows the high image quality multicolor liquid crystal display to be manufactured by a simple method in which color filters are applied by patterning an insulating resist on a plurality of electrodes formed on a substrate, by forming color filters one after another by way of electro- deposition and by patterning a light shielding substance at gaps of the color filters by utilizing the color filter as masks.

A color electrooptical device is disclosed wherein an active matrix substrate and a color filter substrate face each other and are disposed spaced apart a predetermined distance. A plurality of color filters are formed on the color filter substrate. A protection film is formed on the color filter substrate and on the color filters. The protection film is capable of adhering to the color filters and to a transparent conductive film. The transparent conductive film is formed on the protection film. A metal film is formed on the transparent conductive film which is effective for decreasing the resistivity of the transparent conductive film. A liquid crystal is sealed between the active matrix substrate and the color filter substrate and a plurality of switching elements are formed on the active matrix substrate. The metal film comprises a light blocking chromium film etched into a grid shape. The color filters are formed by electrodeposition onto a previously formed ITO film formed in a striped pattern on the color filter substrate.

Color electrooptical device

A liquid crystal optical device is comprised of a liquid crystal layer and a pair of substrates for sandwiching the liquid crystal layer to effect orientation of molecules of the liquid crystal layer. A plurality of base electrodes are disposed on an inner surface of one of the substrates. A plurality of color filter films are electrodeposited on the respective ones of the base electrodes and have different color tones. A plurality of driving electrodes are disposed on the color filter films for applying a driving voltage to the liquid crystal layer. A protective layer is interposed between the color filter films and the driving electrodes to effect buffering of thermal stress caused therebetween.

The present invention relates to a color filter substrate and a color filter electrooptical device, for example, such as color liquid crystal display device having a transparent electrode over a color filter formed on an inner surface of the liquid crystal display device.
