A light emitting device is a light emitting device for use in a photodynamic therapy. The light emitting device includes: a solid-state light-emitting element that emits primary light in which an energy density is 0.5 W/mmor more; and a wavelength converter including a first phosphor that emits first wavelength-converted light. The first wavelength-converted light has a light component across at least a whole of a wavelength range of 700 nm or more and less than 800 nm. Energy of fluorescence emitted from the wavelength converter is 100 mW or more. A medical device includes the light emitting device.

A wavelength converter includes a first phosphor activated with Cr; and a second phosphor activated with at least one ion of Ceor Eu. A fluorescence spectrum of a fluorescence emitted by the second phosphor has a peak where a fluorescence intensity shows a maximum value in a wavelength range of 500 nm or more to less than 580 nm. The wavelength converter emits a fluorescence having a light component over an entire range of 500 nm or more to less than 580 nm. The wavelength converter emits a light having a spectrum in which a ratio of a minimum light emission intensity to a maximum light emission intensity is 40% or less in a wavelength range of 550 nm or more to 700 nm or less.

A light emitting device includes a light source that emits a primary light having a light energy density exceeding 0.5W/mm, and a first phosphor that absorbs the primary light to convert the primary light into a first wavelength-converted light having a wavelength longer than that of the primary light. The first phosphor includes a compound serving as a host, the compound being a simple oxide including one kind of metal element or a composite oxide including a plurality of different kinds of the simple oxide as an end member. A fiber light source includes a solid-state light source, a wavelength convertor, and an optical fiber. The phosphor according to an aspect of the present disclosure contains a crystal phase having a chemical composition CeYLaSiN, where x and y satisfy 0&#x3c;x&#x2264;0.6, and (1.5&#x2212;x)&#x2264;y&#x2264;(3&#x2212;x). The phosphor has an emission spectral peak within a wavelength range of 600 nm or more and 660 nm or less and a first excitation spectral peak within a wavelength range of 480 nm or more and 550 nm or less.
