A communication device: stores flow condition information for identifying a flow and flow counter information that indicates, for each flow, an input flow volume of a flow inputted to the communication device, and an output flow volume of a flow outputted by the communication device; identifies a flow to which data inputted to the communication device belongs, with reference to the flow condition information; updates the input flow volume of the flow in the flow counter information; identifies a flow to which data outputted by the communication device belongs, with reference to the flow condition information; updates the output flow volume of the flow in the flow counter information; and identifies a flow in which a communication anomaly has occurred on the basis of results of a comparison process for comparing the input flow volume to the output flow volume with reference to the flow counter information.

Communication device, communication system, and communication method

In a conventional 'distributed' integrated network node architecture, specific judgment processes cannot be executed in any routing and transferring unit. The routing and transferring unit is required to share judgment process related information with an enhanced processing unit or other routing and transferring units. Thus, when using enhanced processing units, manufacturing costs increase, while processing speed decreases when routing and transferring units cooperate. If any flow is disposed during a transfer from a packet transferring unit in a routing and transferring unit to a processing unit, the packet is disposed regardless of packet priority. In the present invention, a packet related to a specific judgment process is always transmitted to a specific routing and transferring unit from a line interface unit. If an inputted flow is over the transferring capacity, the line interface unit analyzes the packet header and determines the type, transport priority, and disposal priority of the packet.

Packet transferring node

An edge router measures a traffic volume inputted into a network, and the measurement result is notified to a network management server. If the network management server judges that the notified traffic volume is 'smaller' than a capacity of a second core router, it will direct a first core router to shift to a power saving mode. The first core router notifies the edge router of the shift to the power saving mode, and the edge router updates a routing table so that the packet to the first core router may be bypassed to the second core router. The first core router shifts to the power saving mode that does not perform packet transfer, and reduction in electric power is realized.

Assessing conditions of power consumption in computer network

A packet forwarding device changes packet transfer performance according to a packet load, and ensures communication quality of an important packet while transfer performance is made minimum to suppress power consumption. The packet forwarding device includes a measuring section to measure the packet load for each packet importance degree, an estimation section to estimate a future packet load for each importance degree based on the measurement result, a performance determination section to determine performance for an operation based on the estimated load, which are provided in, for example, a traffic estimation/performance determination section. Reduction in the power consumption and assurance of the communication quality of the important packet are realized by a minimum performance determination based on an important packet estimation load in the performance determination section and a preferential process of the important packet in the packet forwarding device.

Packet forwarding device

A network system forms a computer network, and includes: a collecting unit; a calculating unit; and a display unit. The collecting unit collects power consumption information from a connecting device. The power consumption information shows power consumption of the connecting device. The calculating unit calculates power consumption of the computer network based on the collected power consumption information. The calculated power consumption is itemized into constituent units based on a configuration of the computer network. The display unit displays the calculated power consumption.

In the case of a 'distributed' integrated network node (architecture), a specific judgment process cannot be executed in any routing and transferring unit. The routing and transferring unit has been required to share such judgment process related information with an enhanced processing unit or with other routing and transferring units. Thus the manufacturing cost has increased when using an enhanced processing unit and the processing speed has been lowered unavoidably when cooperation is required among routing and transferring units. Those have been conventional problems. Furthermore, if any flow is disposed during a transfer from a packet transferring unit provided in a routing and transferring unit to a processing unit, the packet is disposed regardless of the packet priority. This has also been another conventional problem. According to the present invention, however, it is ruled that a packet related to a specific judgment process is always transmitted to a specific routing and transferring unit from a line interface unit. And if a flow is inputted and it is over the transferring capacity between a line interface unit and a routing and transferring unit, the line interface unit analyzes the packet header and determines the type, transport priority, and disposal priority of the packet.

A power-saving packet forwarding device realizing electric power that accords to the number of lines in which communication is performed and a traffic volume inputted from the lines. A header processing unit with which the packet forwarding device is equipped has a plurality of packet processing circuits for performing a packet processing. A line number decision circuit monitors the number of lines in which communication is performed and a traffic volume inputted from the line, and decides presence or absence of an operation of a packet processing circuit. Based on this decision result, a power supply and a clock of the packet processing circuit that does not need to operate are interrupted, and accordingly power saving of the packet forwarding device is realized.

A network switching device includes multiple ports, multiple switching processors, and a table manager. The switching processors respectively have an address table, a output port specification module, an update requirement determination module, and a table update module. The output port specification module refers to a destination address in received data and the address table and specifies a output port for sending the data among the multiple ports. The update requirement determination module determines requirement for update of the address table with regard to a source address in the data. The table manager has an update detail acquisition module and an update request module. Upon determination of the requirement for update of the address table, the update detail acquisition module obtains an update detail of the address table from one of the switching processors. The update request module sends an update request to the switching processors, based on the update detail.

A communication statistic information collection apparatus comprises a unit for searching a flow table for a flow entry corresponding to a searching key, a unit for collecting statistics information for each of flows, a unit for generating a packet for notifying a collector apparatus of stored statistics information, a unit for updating the flow table in accordance with statistics control information shown by a statistics control entry found as a result of searching the flow table, and a unit for generating a sample packet to be transferred to the collect or apparatus at a specified sampling rate in accordance with the statistics control information shown by a specified entry found from the flow table.

A method or apparatus for transferring packets, which enables fast lines to be housed for a high load service that requires many calculations in an edge node in a communication network, in which data flows are concentrated. Information obtained from an input packet is held in a table entry in the apparatus and whether to perform such a processing as encryption, etc. is decided according to the state of the source or destination of the input packet or the internal state of the apparatus, thereby performing such a processing as encryption only for necessary packets and reducing the number of calculations.

A packet switch identifies a communication flow carried across an IP network, observes the communication flow, and acquires statistics data thereof, such as the number of packets that passed through the switch, the number of discarded packets, time at which the packets arrived at the switch, and time at which the packets were sent out from the switch. The packet switch continues to acquire the statistics data on the communication flow while the communication flow continues. If the packet switch performs a relay function, it sends the locally obtained statistics data to the adjoining packet switch placed downstream. If the packet switch is a node placed on either end edge of the network, it gathers the statistics data obtained by and delivered from other switches in the network and sends the gathered statistics data to the network management system.
