A method of communication through a network, executed by a communication apparatus that performs transmission by selecting a transmission mode, the method includes determining whether to transmit the data in either a first mode or a second mode when transmitting data; transmitting the data using a predetermined number of kinds of optical signals having different levels in light intensity when determined to transmit in the first mode; and transmitting the data using a fewer number of kinds of optical signals having different levels in light intensity than the predetermined number when determined to transmit in the second mode.

A failure predicting unit predicts a failure in a hard disk device that forms a disk array. A data transferring unit transfers data from a failure-predicted hard disk device for which the failure is predicted by the failure predicting unit to a spare disk. A data deleting unit deletes the data from the failure-predicted hard disk device after the data transferring unit completes transferring the data.

A library apparatus includes an accessor robot and a flat cable connected to the accessor robot. The flat cable has an outer check line and an inner check line each formed of a conductor. Breaks in each of the outer check line and the inner check line are detected to identify wear on the flat cable, and prevent sudden failure of the library apparatus.
