The present invention discloses an information processing apparatus comprising a display device to display images and a touch panel device to output signals for a depressing position and a depressing pressure. The images of the icons that are displayed are changed depending on the output from the touch panel device. The composite icon display control is determined for the depressing pressure level information as the comparison result of the depressing pressure and reference depressing pressure and depressing position change information as the monitoring result of depressing position in addition to the depressing position information of the touch panel device. When the touch panel is depressed with a weak pressure, the icon corresponding to the depressing position is displayed in the highlight display mode. In addition, when the touch panel is depressed with a higher pressure to move the depressing position corresponding to the knob of an icon of the varying device such as a slide volume having the knob, both knob position and amount of control of the varying device change following the movement of the depressing position.

Disclosed howling eliminating apparatus comprises frequency analyzing means 32 for detecting a frequency which causes howling, band eliminating means 20 for eliminating a band including the howling frequency detected by the frequency analyzing means, and controlling means 30 for controlling both the frequency analyzing means and the band eliminating means in their characteristics. The frequency analyzing means is controlled to divide input frequencies into a plurality of wide bands, detect howling status in each of the divided wide bands to isolate one wide band suspected to include the howling frequency. When the one wide band causing the howling is isolated, the frequency analyzing means divides the suspected wide band into a plurality of narrow bands, and detects the howling frequency in one of the narrow bands. The band eliminating means is controlled to eliminate the narrow band including the howling frequency. The apparatus thus shortens the time it takes to detect howling with a minimum of hardware.

The operation of an electronic appliance, such as a cassette tape deck, is controlled completely or partially by switch operation. The appliance includes a memory for storage of control information, setting devices, such as switches, for entering the control information, a memory lock or latch for controlling the operating state of the appliance based on the control information supplied from the memory or from the setting devices to the memory lock, and for locking the appliance into such operating state, a display arrangement adapted for display of the setting information and for display of the information in the memory lock, and a setting change display indicator. The setting information stored in the memory can be checked by actuating a check switch, which causes the setting information stored in the memory to be displayed without affecting the operating state in which the appliance is locked. When the operating state is changed by a setting operation while the information previously stored in the memory has been transferred to the memory lock to control the operating state of the appliance, so that the contents of the memory lock (i.e., the operating state in which the appliance is locked) are not coincident with the corresponding information stored in the memory, the fact of such change is displayed on the setting change display indicator. This notifies an operator that the information is being changed, and assists the operator in avoiding unintentional errors.

In a tape recorder of the type having a first or drive gear rotatable with the capstan by a motor, a second or driven gear rotated by the drive gear when in meshing engagement therewith and having a toothless portion to permit rotation of the drive gear independently of the second gear when the latter is disposed in a rest position with its toothless portion facing the first gear, an actuator in the form of a cam rotatable with the second gear and engaging a lever by which, for example, a head carriage is moved to its operative position for establishing the playback mode of the tape recorder in response to turning of the second gear, and a latching assembly normally holding the second gear in its rest position and being actuable, for example, for selection of the playback mode, to permit angular displacement of the second gear from its rest position into meshing engagement with the first or drive gear so as to be driven by the latter in a substantially complete revolution whereupon the latching assembly agains holds the second gear substantially in its rest position; a drive circuit is selectively operative to drive the motor at two different speeds, and a drive control circuit is operable simultaneously with actuation of the latching assembly to changeover the drive circuit from driving the motor at the higher of the two speeds to driving the motor at the other or slower of the two speeds which, for example, is standard for the playback mode. When the stop mode of the tape recorder is again selected, the drive control circuit again causes the motor to be driven at the higher speed.
