A mixed powder layer is applied by coating to a cavity of a forging die made of an Fe-base alloy, at least to the region of the cavity to be reinforced or repaired, the mixed powder layer comprising the first element powder capable of being converted into a carbide to enhance the hardness of the forging die and the second element powder having a melting point lower than that of the first element powder. Die reinforcing is carried out by forging a work by using a forging die covered with the mixed powder layer and heat-treating the die by utilizing the working heat generated in the forging to thereby make the layer reflow and diffuse the carbide in the die.

Die reinforcing method and die repairing method

A raw steel is coated with or surrounded by a boron compound (step S). A coating film of h-BN is formed on the surface of the raw steel. Then, the raw steel is nitrided by a nitriding gas while being heated (step S). B from the boron compound and N from the nitriding gas are diffused into the raw steel, turning the raw steel into a steel material containing B and N. Most of B and N are present as an Fe (B, N) solid solution or an Fe (C, B, N) solid solution in the structure of the steel material. The raw steel is heated and nitrided under conditions such that B and N are contained ranging from 7 to 30 ppm by weight and ranging from 10 to 70 ppm by weight, respectively.

A compact is obtained from a mixed powder of a multi-component system ceramics composed of constitutive elements of at least two metal elements selected from the group consisting of Ti, Al, V, Nb, Zr, Hf, Mo, Ta, Cr, and W, N, and optionally C; and Fe, Ni, Co, or an alloy composed of a constitutive element of at least one metal element of Fe, Ni, and Co. A composite material is prepared by sintering the compact.

After an alloy powder including W, Cr, at least one of Ti, Zr, and Hf, and at least one of V, Nb, and Ta is produced, the alloy powder, a powdery carbon material, and a catalyst are heat-treated in the presence of a nitrogen gas. The alloy powder is carbonitrided into a multicomponent ceramics powder, and sintered into a sintered body. Alternatively, a powder of a first substance including at least two of Ti, Al, V, Nb, Zr, Hf, Mo, Ta, Cr, and W is molded into a molded body. Then, the surface of the molded body is surrounded by a second substance including a metal element which is not contained in the powder of the first substance, and the molded body is heat-treated in an atmosphere in which N is present. A porous sintered body thus produced is crushed into a multicomponent ceramics powder.

A metal material comprises a Zn&#x2014;Al&#x2014;Sn based alloy (ZAS alloy) and Cu diffused in the alloy, wherein Cu is diffused into the inside of the alloy to a depth from the surface of 0.5 mm or more, the concentration of Cu decreases from the surface of the ZAS alloy towards the inside thereof, and there is present no specific interface between Cu and the ZAS alloy; and a method for producing the metal material involves applying, to the surface of the ZAS alloy, an agent comprising a solvent and, dispersed therein, a material containing Cu such as a Cu powder and a Cu&#x2014;Mn alloy powder and preferably, dispersed or dissolved therein, a reducing agent capable of reducing an oxide film present on the surface of the ZAS alloy, and heating the ZAS alloy having the agent applied thereon, to thereby diffuse Cu into the alloy.

Metal material and method for production thereof

A die comprises metal-rich sections which form an inner wall and an outer wall of the die, respectively. Gradient sections are disposed adjacent to the metal-rich sections, respectively. Further, a ceramics-rich section is disposed between the gradient sections. A punch comprises an inner ceramics-rich section, a gradient section, and an outer metal-rich section. In the die, the composition ratio of metal gradually decreases from the metal-rich sections to the ceramics-rich section. Similarly, in the punch, the composition ratio of the metal gradually decreases from the metal-rich section to the ceramics-rich section.

A machining surface of a machining tool such as a drill is composed of a metal-rich section. A ceramics-rich section is formed centrally in the drill. Further, a gradient section is provided between the ceramics-rich section and the metal-rich section. In the gradient section, the composition ratio of metal is gradually increased from the ceramics-rich section to the metal-rich section. That is, the drill is composed of the gradient composite material in which the composition ratio of ceramics is increased and the composition ratio of metal is decreased inwardly from the machining surface.

Disclosed is a molding method for powder particles, which is excellent in molding performance, and which makes it possible to obtain a preliminary molded product excellent in strength by enhancing mutual bonding between particles in the preliminary molded product. A molding apparatus for powder particles includes an outer frame die having a mold space with a lower punch and an upper punch to be slidably fitted thereto. Slight clearances exist between the outer frame die and the lower and upper punches. A mixture is prepared by mixing a powdery raw material with a liquid additive to cause an exothermic reaction therewith.

A functionally gradient material having desired characteristics without having any joining section is efficiently obtained by means of integration effected by a sintering treatment, the functionally gradient material comprising a metal part composition containing predetermined components based on a basic composition of tungsten and copper and a ceramic part composition containing predetermined components based on a basic composition of aluminum nitride and aluminum. Therefore, the metal and the ceramic are integrated into one unit without providing any joining section to give a high joining reliability and high thermal conductivity.

Functionally gradient material and method for producing the same

A functionally gradient member comprises, in an integrated manner, a ceramic part composition layer having desired insulation performance and thermal conductivity, a metal part composition layer having desired thermal conductivity and electric conductivity, and a composite composition layer disposed at a boundary portion between the ceramic part composition layer and the metal part composition layer and having its composition and physical properties which are gradually changed. Accordingly, the metal and the ceramic are integrated into one unit without providing any joining section to provide the functionally gradient member having high joining reliability and having high thermal conductivity.

A process for modifying the surface of a base metal formed from a hard material instead of forming a coating film thereon comprises compacting a powder of a hard material, baking the compacted product, dipping the baked product in an alkoxide containing titanium, and sintering the alkoxide-covered baked product in a nitrogen gas atmosphere. The sintered product has very hard titanium carbide, nitride or carbide-nitride particles deposited on the base metal surface. The particles are partly embedded in the base metal and partly protrude from its surface, and are, therefore, very unlikely to come off, while they withstand a temperature change very well.
