An internal combustion engine electrical system is disclosed which is adapted to use an internal combustion engine as a driving source. The generating system is constructed in a manner such that the output of an A.C. generator driven by the engine is rectified by a rectifier circuit, and the output of the rectifier circuit is inverted into an A.C. output by an inverter circuit adapted to use, a commutation command signal, the output of an oscillator circuit which generates a signal of a constant frequency.

A safety device for controlling an ignition circuit for an internal combustion engine associated with a transmission coupling the engine to a load comprises a thyristor adapted to permit, upon conduction thereof, the ignition circuit to produce a high voltage to fire a spark plug provided in the engine, a position-responsive switch adapted to permit application of a trigger signal from a power supply to the gate of the thyristor only when the transmission is in neutral, and a capacitor coupled across the gate and cathode of the thyristor to be charged by a voltage drop thereacross and to provide a trigger signal to the gate of the thyristor. Once the capacitor is charged it maintains a condition wherein the thyristor is turned on whenever the thyristor is positively biased even after the transmission is in gear. Thus the safety device disables the ignition circuit to prevent the engine from starting with the transmission in gear, but once the engine is started the transmission can be shifted into gear without disabling the ignition circuit.

Safety device for controlling an ignition circuit

An engine stopping device for stopping an internal combustion engine provided with an ignition system energized by a generator driven by the engine. The stopping device comprises a switch for making ineffective at least one of the elements of the ignition system, an actuator for actuating the switch into the operated state and a retaining device for retaining the switch in the operated state until the engine is brought to a standstill. Although it takes time for the engine to be brought to a standstill, the operator just has to give the actuator one touch operation, such as pressing a button, and may release the actuator before the standstill. Subsequent starting of the engine requires no extra operation.

An ignition system for a multiple cylinder internal combustion engine comprises a power supply, a plurality of ignition coils, a plurality of control circuits, each provided in association with a respective one of the ignition coils for controlling the primary current of the associated ignition coil, and a plurality of signal sources producing signals in turn and in time with the rotation of the engine, each of the signal sources provided in association with a respective one of the control circuits, and adapted to produce a signal in advance of the ignition timing of the associated ignition coil. Each of the control circuit includes a gate turn-off thyristor connected in series with the primary winding of the associated ignition coil. The gate turn-off thyristor is adapted to be turned on when the signal source associated with the control circuit including the gate turn-off thyristor produces a signal in advance of the associated ignition coil, and is turned off when one of other signal sources produces a signal at the ignition timing of the associated ignition coil. The above mentioned one of other signal sources also serves to turn on the gate turn-off thyristor of the associated control circuit. Accordingly, the number of required signal sources is reduced and is equal to the number of ignition coils.

Ignition system for a multiple cylinder internal combustion engine

Disclosed herein is an ignition system for an internal combustion engine including a capacitor charged by charge power source, a thyristor for discharging the capacitor through the primary of an ignition coil and a magneto AC generator including a signal generating winding for supplying a gate signal to the thyristor. The ignition system is characterized in that rate of change of the magnetic flux interlinked with the signal generating winding has at least two successive local maximum points, so that at least two successive peaks of the same polarity appears in the voltage induced in the signal generating winding by the magnetic flux variation. The waveform of the voltage induced is utilized for ignition angle advance.

Ignition system for an internal combustion engine

A flywheel magneto generator is disclosed, which includes a flywheel rotor, a stator disposed in the flywheel rotor and a signaling stator disposed outside said flywheel rotor. The flywheel rotor comprises a bowl-like flywheel, a plurality of arcuate permanent magnets engaged at the ends thereof with each other and aligned on the inner surface of the peripheral wall of the flywheel, and securing means for securing the magnets to the flywheel. The invention is characterized in that the securing means comprises a single wedge-like magnetic member interposed between the opposing ends of a pair of the permanent magnets and a screw coupling for coupling said wedge-like magnetic member to the peripheral wall and for urging said wedge-like magnetic member radially outwardly. The screw coupling is provided with an extending member of a magnetic material extending through the peripheral wall of the flywheel, magnetically insulated from the peripheral wall and having an outer end exposed outside the flywheel. The signaling stator is provided adjacent the peripheral wall of the flywheel so that the signaling stator is magnetically associated with the exposed end of the screw coupling.
