A signal processing device that generates an output signal from image data by using a clock corresponding to the pixels of the image data, the signal processing device includes: a delayed signal group generating unit that generates a group of delayed signals with a delay element group formed with stages of delay elements; a clock adjusting unit that generates a modulation/synchronization clock from the group of delayed signals by referring to phase data matching the clock with a predetermined phase and frequency modulation coefficient data converting the clock to a predetermined frequency; and a PWM processing unit that generates a PWM signal from the group of delayed signals by referring to the phase data, the frequency modulation coefficient data, the modulation/synchronization clock, and the image data, the PWM signal having a pulse width corresponding to the value of the image data.

In an apparatus for forming multi-color image provided with a rotatable image carrying member and a plurality of image forming means each having a charging device, a scanning exposure device and a developing device; each scanning exposure device includes a beam generator and a polygonal mirror. The apparatus is further provided with a first sensor for detecting the beam passing at a start reference position on a peripheral surface of the rotatable image carrying member and for outputting a start reference signal; a second sensor for detecting the beam passing at an end reference position on the peripheral surface and for outputting a stop reference signal; and a controller to measure a time between the start reference signal and the stop reference signal and to control a frequency of clock pulses to transmit image signals for each scanning exposure device on the basis of the measured time of each scanning exposure device.

A delay signal generating apparatus incorporated in an integral circuit, includes a plurality of serially-connected delay elements for delaying an input signal successively and for outputting plural delay signals, a heat generating circuit for heating the plurality of delay elements, and a heat controller for controlling a heat amount generated by the heat generating circuit so as to change the delay time of each of the plural delay signals.
