A magnetic head has a narrow upper magnetic pole and is capable of restricting side erasure and record bleeding. The magnetic head is capable of writing data on a recording medium, and includes an upper magnetic pole including a pole section which faces the recording medium and has a prescribed width, and a lower magnetic pole including grooves respectively formed on the both sides of the pole section. A level of edges of the grooves are lower than that of an upper face of the lower magnetic pole.

Magnetic head and method of manufacturing the same

In the thin film magnetic head of the present invention, angle of an end face of a heaped layer with respect to a lower magnetic pole layer is made obtuse so as to prevent flux leakage at a rear part of the heaped layer and improve writing characteristics of the magnetic head. The thin film magnetic head comprises: a lower magnetic pole layer; a gap layer provided on the lower magnetic pole layer; a sub-magnetic pole layer provided on the gap layer; an upper magnetic pole layer connected to a rear part of the sub-magnetic pole layer; and a heaped layer made of an electrically insulating material and provided on the rear side of the gap layer and between the lower magnetic pole layer and the sub-magnetic pole layer, the heaped layer having a slope portion, which is extended toward the gap layer and whose height is gradually reduced toward the same.

The method of making the magnetic resistance element comprises the steps of: forming a first magnetizable layer, a non-magnetizable layer and a second magnetizable layer, in this order, on an insulating layer; providing a resist layer for forming a main part of the magnetic resistance element on the second magnetizable layer; etching side faces of the first magnetizable layer, the non-magnetizable layer and the second magnetizable layer to form into slope faces by ion milling from the second magnetizable layer side; forming terminals on the slope faces; and removing the resist layer, wherein a part of the first magnetizable layer which is located outside of the slope faces is left on the insulating layer when the side faces of the first magnetizable layer, the non-magnetizable layer and the second magnetizable layer are etched by ion milling.

A magnetic head manufacturing method including the steps of forming a recording lower magnetic pole and a recording upper magnetic pole on a substrate and trimming, by the ion milling method, a portion of the recording upper magnetic pole and the recording lower magnetic pole under the condition that the substrate is stationary.

Method and apparatus for manufacturing magnetic head

A method for manufacturing a spin valve GMR head is describe in which a fixed magnetic layer of the head may maintain magnetization in a desired orientation. In one aspect of the invention, the method comprises steps of: forming a magnetic film including at least a free magnetic layer, a non-magnetic metallic layer, a fixed magnetic layer, and a magnetic domain control layer; subjecting the magnetic film to a first heat treatment under a magnetic field to enhance magnetic anisotropy of the free magnetic layer; and subjecting the magnetic film to a second heat treatment under a magnetic field and at a higher temperature than the maximum temperature applied in the processes that precede the second heat treatment, to fix the magnetization in the fixed magnetic layer. In anther aspect of the invention, the method comprises steps of: forming a magnetic film including a free magnetic layer, a non-magnetic metallic layer, a fixed magnetic layer, and a magnetic domain control layer; subjecting the magnetic film to a first heat treatment under a magnetic field to fix the magnetization in the fixed magnetic layer; subjecting the magnetic film to a second heat treatment under a magnetic field to enhance magnetic anisotropy of the free magnetic layer; and subjecting the magnetic film to a third heat treatment in the absence of an externally applied magnetic field.
