A display device has a matrix array of pixels, each provided with a switching element operated by a scanning signal and a pixel electrode supplied with a video signal via the switching element. A method of driving a display device includes selecting of a row of pixels successively in a matrix array of pixels, and supplying of a video signal to each of the selected pixels. A gray scale is produced by writing binary signals into each of the pixels at plural times within one field period, based upon information represented by plural bits. The writing of binary signals is performed by turning on the switching element for one of plural approximately equal portions into which a unit basic scanning period is divided, the unit basic scanning period being a subdivision of one field period, and time intervals between the plural times are selected to be successively shorter.

Display device and method of driving same

A practical-purpose structure of an active-matrix display device digitally driven with vertical scanning being multiplexed includes a vertical driver having sequential circuits and logic circuits provided on a bit-by-bit basis and arranged for adding sequentially products of outputs of the sequential circuit/logic circuit and a control signal for dividing a horizontal scanning period, and a horizontal driver having line latches provided on a bit-by-bit basis and arranged for adding sequentially products of outputs of the line latches and the control signal for dividing the horizontal scanning period. Enhanced luminance of display, manufacturing at low cost and high image quality can be realized with a reasonable wiring density.

Image display apparatus

An apparatus for driving a color display panel operating at a high frame frequency. The color display panel driving apparatus includes a line memory for storing data of 1/2 of a line at its odd-numbered addresses and then storing data of the remaining 1/2 of the line at its even-numbered addresses, a first column drive circuit including a shift register to which the data stored at the odd-numbered addresses of the line memory are supplied and which is connected at its bit outputs to column-direction signal wires associated with a left-hand half display area of the display panel, and a second column drive circuit including a shift register to which the data stored at the even-numbered addresses of the line memory are supplied and which is connected at its bit outputs to column-direction signal wires associated with a right-hand half display area of the display panel. After picture data of one line are completely stored in the line memory, the picture data are substantially simultaneously supplied from the odd-numbered and even-numbered addresses of the line memory to the first and second column drive circuits respectively.
