First and second lamps, first and second ellipsoidal mirrors, first and second spherical mirrors, and a plane mirrorare provided. The first spherical mirroris provided on the same side as the first ellipsoidal mirrorwith respect to the lamp, and the second spherical mirroris provided on the opening side of the second ellipsoidal mirrorwith respect to the second lamp, so that they reflect a respective part of light beams emitted from the first and second lamps toward the first and second ellipsoidal mirrors. The first and second ellipsoidal mirrors are arranged such that the optical axes of their reflected light beams intersect with each other, so that they condense respective light beams emitted from the first and second lamps and respective light beams reflected at the first and second spherical mirrorsand. The plane mirrorreflects at a reflective film, light beams condensed by the first ellipsoidal mirror, and transmits via a light-transmitting portionwhere no reflective film is provided, light beams condensed by the second ellipsoidal mirror; accordingly, light beams emitted from the first and second lamps are combined so as to become light beams travelling coaxially and in the same direction. This can reduce the optical loss when combining light beams emitted from a plurality of lamps.

The optical axis () of the illumination system () and the optical axis () of the projection system () are skew lines. The lens element () allows the exit pupil () of the illumination system () to be conjugated substantially with the entrance pupil () of the projection system (). A projection display device includes a condensing unit and a shading unit. The condensing unit condenses light emitted from a light source to form a condensed spot on a color wheel. The color wheel assembly also has a spatial light modulator for displaying image data that is driving in synchronization with the pulse output by the sensor.
