A gray scale correction method for a display device includes a step of setting a target value including a target luminance and a target chromaticity of a color display pixel (S), a step of measuring tristimulus values of each of a plurality of reference colors and each of a plurality of comparative colors in accordance with a prescribed gamma characteristic (S), a step of finding a reference value and a comparative value from the measured tristimulus values (S), and a step of correcting a gray scale based on the target value, the reference value and the comparative value (S).

A liquid crystal display of the present invention contains a first panel and a second panel being stacked. Adjacent pairs of polarizers (A to C) disposed on the panels form crossed Nicols. When the first panel produces a display according to a first display signal, the second panel produces a display according to a second display signal obtained from the first display signal. Each of the two joined panels is provided with a light diffusion layer having a light diffusing property. The provision of the light diffusion layers enables reducing moire pattern occurrences which would otherwise markedly increase when two liquid crystal panels are stacked. As a result, the liquid crystal display has high display quality.

A driving system of the present invention for use in a displaying device is provided with a pseudo bit-depth extension section. In the pseudo bit-depth extension section, a noise pattern is added to upper-n-bit data of an input signal Din m-bit, where (i) m is an integer of 9 or greater, and (ii) n is an integer of 8 or greater, but less than m. Then, upper-n-bit of data Dthus obtained from the Dis outputted, as output data D, from the pseudo bit-depth extension section. With this driving system which adopts a combination of (a) a overshoot-driving method for enforcing liquid crystal to respond at a high speed, and (b) a bit-depth extension technology in which a number of grayscales is increased by adding noise, it is possible to provide, at a low cost, a high-definition displaying device such as a liquid crystal display, having a high-response-characteristics and a high quality of grayscale reproduction.

Driving system for display device

A driving system of the present invention for use in a displaying device is provided with a pseudo bit-depth extension section. In the pseudo bit-depth extension section, a noise pattern is added to upper-n-bit data of an input signal D0 in m-bit, where (i) m is an integer of 9 or greater, and (ii) n is an integer of 8 or greater, but less than m. With this driving system which adopts a combination of (a) a overshoot-driving method for enforcing liquid crystal to respond at a high speed, and (b) a bit-depth extension technology in which a number of grayscales is increased by adding noise, it is possible to provide, at a low cost, a high-definition displaying device such as a liquid crystal display, having a high-response-characteristics and a high quality of grayscale reproduction.

An evaluation apparatus of a liquid crystal display device in accordance with the present invention is provided with a signal section for supplying a signal to a liquid crystal panel to be evaluated; a display detection section for sensing a display state on the liquid crystal panel; an analysis section for analyzing a detection result of the display detection section. The signal section supplies to the liquid crystal panel a signal corresponding to an original tone and then, in accordance with tone transition from the original tone to an attainment tone, either (i) an overshoot test signal or (ii) both an overshoot test signal and an undershoot test signal in test driving, while sweeping either a level of the signal (i) or levels of both the signals (ii). The analysis section analyzes detection results of the display detection section obtained in the test driving and stores in association with the original tone and the attainment tone, a level of the test signal that corresponds to an optimum one of the detection results. With this, it is possible to easily and highly accurately obtain an optimum level of the overshoot signal or the undershoot signal for the liquid crystal panel to be evaluated.

A processing section makes an instruction for a process to take place if certain conditions are met. In response to the instruction for a process, a signal generation circuit outputs a signal which reduces a degree of modulation or variation by which tone transition is facilitated relatively to a case where pixels are driven on the basis of data output from an ordinary processing section. Thus, by modulating or varying a drive signal to a degree suitable for a case where tone transition is sufficient, a display capable of improving display quality even in a situation where the display is not capable of being driven suitably, can be realized using circuitry of a relatively small scale.

In a method for driving a display, a display, and a program therefor, a memory stores uncorrected video data for a desired frame and for a current frame until a next frame. The adoption of the interpolation by use of the local coordinate system enables the finding of the target applied gradation data (interpolated value) with higher accuracy, while a variety of additional conditions are taken into consideration.

A method of aligning a liquid crystal includes a step of fixing on a hot plate and heating a liquid crystal cell in which a liquid crystal composed of a ferroelectric liquid crystal material sealed between electrode substrates respectively having alignment films having applied thereto a uniaxial alignment by rubbing. According to the described method, a pressure is applied to the liquid crystal cell by a roller, and a portion subjected to an application of pressure is moved by moving the roller. Further, the liquid crystal is heated within a temperature range between a phase transition temperature of SmA phase SmC* phase and a temperature 10&deg; C. below the phase transition temperature, and the portion subjected to an application of pressure is moved in the same direction as the rubbing direction, thereby achieving the C,orientation at higher yield. Within the described temperature range, by moving the portion in an opposite direction to the rubbing direction, a C,orientation can be always achieved at high yield (almost 100%). As a result, the C,orientation can be surely achieved in the liquid crystal display element with ease.

A liquid crystal injecting device has a jig which seals an opening used as a liquid crystal inlet of the cell and another opening used as an air outlet of the cell separately. When obtaining a liquid crystal element by injecting liquid crystal into the cell, the liquid crystal is applied to the inlet before the injection, and after an internal pressure of the cell is reduced by releasing air from the jig, the liquid crystal is injected to the cell by being supplied to the inlet through a liquid crystal supplying tube. During the injection, a temperature of the cell is set to a temperature at which the liquid crystal takes a nematic, cholesteric, or isotropic phase, while air is kept being released. When the injection ends, the liquid crystal is further applied to the inlet and outlet, while being reinjected into the cell through all the openings at room temperature or above under atmospheric pressure or above, after which the cell is cooled.
