A control device for an internal combustion engine includes an intake-side variable valve timing mechanism and a controller. The intake-side variable valve timing mechanism is configured to continuously advance or retard a phase of a cam that actuates an intake valve. The controller is configured to actuate the intake-side variable valve timing mechanism toward a retardation side and position the intake-side variable valve timing mechanism at a prescribed position, and execute fail-safe control on the basis of a signal from a cam position sensor instead of a signal from the crank position sensor, when it is determined that there is a failure in a crank position sensor of the internal combustion engine.

In valve timing control after issuance of an engine stop instruction with a prescribed value set as a target phase, an ECU delays permission of an engine stop process within a prescribed time period while an intake valve phase has not yet reached the target value, so that a valve timing control operation is continued while the engine operation is continued in an idle state. After the lapse of a prescribed time period from the issuance of the engine stop instruction, however, the ECU permits the engine stop process no matter whether the intake valve phase has reached the target value or not. As a result, the amount of valve timing that can be changed by the valve timing control in the engine stop operation can be increased, without causing any uncomfortable feeling of the driver.

Variable valve timing apparatus and control method thereof

In a variable valve timing apparatus having a VVT mechanism in each of a plurality of banks, start of a valve timing control is not permitted until reference position learning of valve timing is completed in the corresponding bank and in other banks. Accordingly, the plurality of banks come to have matching valve timing setting at the time of valve timing control, whereby variation in the amount of air introduced to cylinders can be suppressed, and satisfactory combustion characteristics can be maintained.

The engine ECU executes the program including the step of starting a timer that counts the time elapsed from a start request, the step of detecting a temperature of the engine, and the step of calculating a DI ratio r such that the fuel is injected from the in-cylinder injector as well, when the engine is in the very cold or cold state, when there is no abnormality in the fuel system, and when starting of the engine is not yet detected even after a lapse of a predetermined period of time from the start request, only if the fuel pressure in the high-pressure system is not lower than a fuel pressure threshold value.

In feedback control of a discharge amount of a high pressure fuel pump in which an actual fuel pressure is caused to become a target fuel pressure, when a deviation between the target fuel pressure and the actual fuel pressure has transiently changed, updating of an integral term of the feedback control is stopped. As a result, needless updating of the integral term when the deviation of the target fuel pressure and the actual fuel pressure has transiently increased is inhibited, and fuel pressure overshoot is reliably suppressed.

An engine ECU performs a program including the steps of calculating an amount of the fuel required to be discharged from high-pressure fuel pumps (the required discharge amount), determining whether one high-pressure fuel pump can be stopped, and if not, determining whether the required discharge amount exceeds a maximum possible discharge amount of one high-pressure fuel pump of smaller capability, and if not, causing the two high-pressure fuel pumps to discharge the fuel in approximately equal amount, or if so, causing the high-pressure fuel pump of smaller capability to discharge the fuel of the maximum possible discharge amount and causing the high-pressure fuel pump of larger capability to discharge the fuel of the amount obtained by subtracting the discharge amount of the high-pressure fuel pump of smaller capability from the required discharge amount.

An engine ECU executes a program including the steps of, when it is necessary to calculate an integral term, employing an integral term for use when two pumps are operating for calculation of a duty when the number of operating pumps is 2 and storing the calculated integral term in a memory as the one for use in the case of two pumps operating, and employing an integral term for use when one pump is operating for calculation of a duty when the number of operating pumps is not 2 and storing the calculated integral term in the memory as the one for use in the case of one pump operating.

Fuel pressure control device of internal combustion engine

An ECU varies a period during which an intake valve and an exhaust valve are both simultaneously open by setting a target overlap angle OVP to be equal to a limit overlap angle OVL until the coolant temperature becomes higher than a reference temperature to reduce the internal EGR amount. This prevents combustion deterioration in a gasoline engine.
