A fluorine-containing surface active composition capable reducing the surface tension of water and the interfacial tension between water and oil, which comprises (A) at least one of cationic, non-ionic to ampho-ionic surfactant showing a surface tension of not more than 25 dyne/cm when determined on a 0.01 to 1.0 % by weight aqueous solution and having at least one fluorine-containing group comprising not less than 6 carbon atoms, of which each carbon atom bears at least one fluorine atom, and (B) at least one of surfactants of the formula: ##STR1## wherein R is a substituted or unsubstituted aliphatic group of 4 to 20 carbon atoms or a substituted or unsubstituted aromatic hydrocarbon group of 6 to 20 carbon atoms, R.sup.1, R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 are each a hydrogen atom, a substituted or unsubstituted aliphatic group of 4 to 20 carbon atoms, a substituted or unsubstituted aromatic hydrocarbon group of 6 to 20 carbon atoms or a fluorine-containing group comprising not more than 5 carbon atoms, of which each carbon atom bears at least one fluorine atom, and X.sup.- is an anion, provided that at least one of R.sup.1, R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 is a fluorine-cntaining group or, when none of R.sup.1, R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 is a fluorine-containing group, X.sup.- is an anion corresponding to the fluorine-containing group.

Fluorine-containing surface active compositions

A fluorine-containing quaternary ammonium compound of the formula: ##STR1## wherein R.sub.f is a fluorine-containing straight or branched aliphatic hydrocarbon or polyether group, R.sub.1, R.sub.2 and R.sub.3 are each a C.sub.1 -C.sub.21 straight or branched alkyl, hydroxyalkyl or alkenyl group or a substituted or unsubstituted aryl or aralkyl group, R.sub.4 is a hydrogen atom or a acyl group, X.sup.- is an anion and n is an integer of 1 to 3, having a capability of reducing the surface tension of water and the interfacial tension between water and oil.

Fluorine-containing surface active composition

A fluorine-containing compound of the formula: ##STR1## wherein Rf is a C.sub.3 -C.sub.21 fluorine-containing group; R is a hydrogen atom or a C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 acyl group; Q is an aliphatic or aromatic hydrocarbon group having not more than twenty-one carbon atoms; and n is an integer of 1 to 10 lowers the surface tensions of water and/or organic liquids and the interfacial tensions between them.

A fluorine-containing surface active composition capable of reducing the surface tension of water and the interfacial tension between water and oil, which comprises (A) at least one cationic, non-ionic or ampho-ionic surfactant showing a surface tension of not more than 25 dyne/cm when determined on a 0.01 to 1.0% by weight aqueous solution and having at least one fluorine-containing group comprising not less than 6 carbon atoms, of which each carbon atom bears at least one fluorine atom, and (B) at least one of surfactants of the formula: ##STR1## wherein R is a substituted or unsubstituted aliphatic group of 4 to 20 carbon atoms or a substituted or unsubstituted aromatic hydrocarbon group of 6 to 20 carbon atoms, R.sup.1, R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 are each a hydrogen atom, a substituted or unsubstituted aliphatic group of 4 to 20 carbon atoms, a substituted or unsubstituted aromatic hydrocarbon group of 6 to 20 carbon atoms or a fluorine-containing group comprising not more than 5 carbon atoms, of which each carbon atom bears at least one fluorine atom, and X.sup.- is an anion, provided that at least one of R.sup.1, R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 is a fluorine-containing group or, when none of R.sup.1, R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 is fluorine-containing group, X.sup.- is an anion corresponding to the fluorine-containing group.

Use of a water-soluble high molecular compound which contains a fluoroalkyl group and a water-solubilizable group, having a molecular weight of not less than 5000 and a fluorine content of not less than 10% by weight and is soluble in water in an amount of at least 0.1% by weight at 25.degree. C. and of which the surface tension is not more than 50 dyn/cm when measured on 0.1 to 5.0% by weight aqueous solution at 25.degree. C., as an additive to a foam fire-extinguishing agent so as to improve and enhance the fire-extinguishing performances of the latter, particularly for the firing of polar organic solvents, is disclosed.
