An internal combustion engine comprising a scroll compressor unit having a pair of scrolls interfitted to each other to define a compression chamber therebetween and a scroll expansion unit having a pair of scrolls interfitted to each other to define an expansion chamber therebetween. The compressor chamber is communicated to the compression chamber through a check valve, and a burning unit for detonating a fuel together with a working fluid in the expansion chamber to expand it thereby driving the scroll expansion unit. The scroll compressor unit and the scroll expansion unit are interconnected by an interconnecting unit.

A scroll-type fluid machine has a drive scroll which is rotatably supported by a novel bearing arrangement. The bearing arrangement includes a bearing housing which is detachably mounted on a casing of the fluid machine. A journal bearing which rotatably supports a drive shaft of the drive scroll is secured inside the bearing housing. An oil seal surrounds the drive shaft beneath the bearing, and grease fills the space between the bearing and the oil seal.

A pair of interfitting scrolls are housed in a first container which communicates with a vacuum chamber to be evacuated by the pump. The scrolls are rotated in synchrony about parallel, nonaligned axis by a drive motor. The scrolls define a plurality of spiral compression chambers which change in size when the scrolls are rotated, compressing a gas contained in the compression chambers. The shaft of one of the scrolls has a discharge port formed therein which communicates between the centermost compression chamber and the inside of a second container which adjoins the first container. The second container is partially filled with lubricating oil and communicates with the atmosphere. The discharge port is equipped with a check valve which permits compressed gas to enter the second container from the scrolls but prevents gas from flowing in the opposite direction. The pump may be further equipped with one or more oil supply passageways formed in the shaft of the scroll in which the discharge port is formed. Lubricating oil is introduced via the oil supply passageway from the second container into one or more of the compression chambers of the pump.

A molded-type underwater motor is equipped with a stator core impregnated with varnish, powder coatings provided on the perimeters of coil ends projecting from the sides of the stator core, and a resin molded body covering both the powder coated coil ends and the stator core. A motor of the submersible type drives a pump immersible in liquids. The motor is provided with guide grooves formed on the motor bracket for guiding undesirable small particles falling by gravity onto the bracket away from the area near the motor shaft so that before an overabundance of undesirable small particles accumulates on a collar mounted on the motor shaft, the accumulated particles gravity fall into the guide grooves. By this arrangement the undersirable wear of the motor shaft and oil seals located between the motor shaft and the motor bracket is eliminated.
