Disclosed is a composition for electrode comprising (i) a positive electrode active material comprising an iron compound and carbon, and (ii) a copolymer (P) prepared by copolymerization of acrylic acid esters and/or methacrylic acid esters, with an &#x3b1;,&#x3b2;-unsaturated nitrile compound. Also disclosed is an electrode comprised of an active material layer made of the composition for electrode, and a collector. This electrode can be produced by mixing the positive electrode active material, the copolymer (P), a solvent and an optional thickener, by a mixer to prepare an electrode composition slurry with solid content of 40-90% by weight, coating a collector with the electrode composition slurry, and then, removing the solvent from the thus-formed coating. Further disclosed a battery provided with the electrode.

The first layer can occlude and release the part of the lithium to be occluded and released, thereby reducing the volume change of the second layer. Such a structure of the negative electrode enables us to enhance cycling efficiency, and to attain long cycle life and good safety.

An aniline polymer having structural Formula I: ##STR1## wherein both n1 and n2 are integers of 2 or more, m is an integer of 0 or more and X.sup.- is any anion. A substance for use in an electrode must be an aniline polymer having preferably two or more serial S--S linkages, such as 'S--S--S', 'S--S--S--S' and the like, consisting of sulfur. By having such structures, the substance, when used as an electrode active material, serves to improve capacity considerably as compared with other conventional electrode active materials.
