A reading apparatus reads identification information attached on an object located outside of the reading apparatus by optically scanning a surface of the object. The reading apparatus includes a supporting member that supports a optical deflecting unit and that rotatably supports a light collecting unit.

Apparatus for optically reading identification information from commodity

An optical reader capable of reading a bar code in a mounted state when an article carrying the bar code passes and of reading bar codes set in array on a menu sheet in a hand-held state has been disclosed. The optical reader comprises a light source, a scanner that is driven by a drive and scans light emanating from the light source, a plurality of reflection mirrors that reflect scanning light scanned by the scanner and create a scanning pattern composed of a plurality of scan trajectories, a read window through which scanning light reflected from the reflection mirrors is emitted, and a light receiver for receiving light reflected from a mark. The optical reader further comprises a mode changer for changing a plurality of operation modes among which one or ones of the plurality of scan trajectories to be validated for reading are different. The operation modes include a specific scanning ray mode in which reading the mark by tracing only a given scan trajectory constituting the scanning pattern is validated but reading the mark by tracing the other scan trajectories is invalidated. For reading any of bar codes set in array on a menu sheet, the given scan trajectory constituting the scanning pattern will be drawn on a bar code to be read. Since reading by tracing the other scan trajectories is invalid, only the bar code to be read is read.

Optical reader applicable to plurality of uses

Management information, which is information about hardware in or software installed in the bar-code reader, is stored in a storage unit in the bar-code reader. The management information may be acquired from an external unit or read from a bar code.

Bar-code reader

An optical reader which is compatible with every environment irrespective of installation and usage environments, thereby enabling uniform manufacturing, satisfactory reading reliance, and operative safety and user-friendliness. The optical unit is mounted on the stage, and there is provided an inclination apparatus which inclines the stage at a desired angle. Thereby, without changing a preset optimal scanning pattern, only its emitting direction becomes changeable freely.

A bar code reader has an arrangement to communicate with a host apparatus. The bar code reader includes a read unit that reads a bar code attached to an article, and outputs bar code information corresponding to the read bar code; a term information acquisition unit that acquires term information included in the bar code information; and a term expiration check unit that checks whether the term of the article has expired based on the term information. A notification unit notifies that the term of the article has expired upon determination by the term expiration check unit that the term of the article has expired.

Bar code reader and bar code read control method

A still image of a moving object is restored from portions including the object in an image by using a movement distance of the object during an exposure time and the difference value between output values of adjacent pixels, the movement distance being calculated as a number of pixels. Therefore, especially in cases where a moving bar code is imaged, even if the image of the bar code is blurred as a result of the movement of the bar code during imaging, a still image of the bar code in which the outlines of the black portions and white portions of the bar code are clear can be obtained. Accordingly, bar code information can be read out from the imaged bar code.

For reading any of bar codes set in an array format on a menu sheet, the single scan trajectory constituting the scanning pattern will be drawn on a bar code to be read. Since reading by tracing the multiple scan trajectories is invalid, only the bar code intended to be read is read.

The optical unit is mounted on the stage, and there is provided an inclination apparatus which inclines the stage at a desired angle. A scanning apparatus and an optical reading apparatus according to the invention is featured in obtaining reading result corresponding to a plurality of bar code symbols by processing, as predetermined, demodulated data corresponding to signal light from the bar code labels and optically readable symbols. Such a scanning apparatus extracts sets of consecutive data, which consecutively indicate all bar code symbols constituting the bar code symbols, from the demodulated data, and further chooses only sets of consecutive data that are different from each other, whereby reading data corresponding to a plurality of bar code symbols are collectively obtained. Furthermore, the optical reading apparatus collectively obtains the reading result corresponding to a plurality of symbols by extracting data that meets predetermined conditions and are different from each other, from the data obtained by demodulation.

Optical device to collectively read a plurality of bar codes and/or a plurality of optical readable symbols

In a bar-code reader in a POS system, bar-code data is compared with the just previously read bar-code data to detect whether they are identical or not, and if the bar-code data is not identical to the just previously read bar-code data, the bar-code data is transmitted to a station host and, at the same time, a notification is produced to indicate that the bar-code data has been transmitted. If they are identical, and if a double reading prevention timer is not ON, the bar-code data is transmitted to the station host and, at the same time, a notification is produced to signify that the bar-code data has been transmitted; on the other hand, if the double reading prevention timer is ON, the bar-code data is discarded, and a notification signifying the discarding of the data is produced with different sounds from that used for the transmission notification. When treading a bar code attached to a product, this feature allows the operator to know what to do next when the same product as the immediately previous one is scanned during the ON period of the double reading prevention timer activated to prevent double reading of the same product. This alleviates an operator's stress when performing the reading operation.

Bar-code reader and controlling method therefor

In a bar-code reading apparatus, an enclosure is provided with various mechanisms, includes a hand-holding portion and a reading portion having a reading window. Projections are provided at two sides of the enclosure, and a cable extends out from one of the projections. The projections engage with supporting-point cut-out portions of supporting portions in a stand, in a stationary condition. The reading window is therefore located lower than the hand-holding portion.
