A fixing member is spaced from a head actuator by a predetermined distance. A flexible printed circuit board extends at least from the head actuator to the fixing member. The flexible printed circuit board is superposed on the surface of the fixing member. A viscoelastic layer and a protecting layer are overlaid on the surface of the flexible printed circuit board. A clip clips all the fixing member, the flexible printed circuit board, the viscoelastic layer and the protecting layer together. When a head slider is positioned, the head actuator changes its attitude relative to a recording disk. The inertial force based on the rotation causes the first flexible printed circuit board to vibrate when the actuator block stops rotating. The viscoelastic layer serves to absorb this residual vibration of the first flexible printed circuit board. Vibration of the flexible printed circuit board can be suppressed.

The magnetic disk device includes magnetic disks, magnetic head arms and wind shield members arranged above and below the magnetic disks, respectively, in a region adjacent to the magnetic head arms. The wind shield members are arranged on the rotationally upstream side of the magnetic head arms, and the air flow generated by the rotation of the magnetic disks and impinging against the magnetic head arms is guided to the outside of the magnetic disks.

A recording disk apparatus includes a recording disk supported by a rotation axis. A clamp is fixed at the tip end of the rotation axis by screws so as to urge the recording disk against a flange at the base end of the rotation axis. The screws are disposed along an imaginary circle concentric to the rotation axis so as to fix a plane body of the clamp at the tip end of the rotation axis. A rigidity reduction mechanism reduces rigidity of the plane body at an intermediate area relative to the screw bore areas, which intermediate area is defined between the screw bore areas along the imaginary circle. The rigidity reduction mechanism serves to suppress the undulation of the magnetic disk.

Disclosed herein is a magnetic disk drive including a spindle shaft fixed to a base, a coil mounted on the spindle shaft, a spindle hub rotatably mounted on the spindle shaft, a magnetic disk fixed to the spindle hub and having a plurality of tracks, a permanent magnet fixed to the spindle hub, a magnetic head for reading/writing information from/to the magnetic disk, and an actuator for moving the magnetic head across the tracks of the magnetic disk. The magnetic disk drive further includes a cover fixed to the base and having a hole at a position corresponding to the spindle shaft, a first metal washer placed on the cover at a portion around the hole, a second metal washer for sandwiching the cover at the portion around the hole in cooperation with the first metal washer, and a screw for securing the first and second metal washers to the spindle shaft.

A disk device has a housing structure capable of reducing unnecessary vibrations of the base of the disk device by improving the rigidity thereof. A bath-tub type base of the disk device includes a damping structure on the bottom or on the sides adjacent to the bottom for attenuating the vibrations of the base. Apparatus for writing a reference signal into the disk of the device using a reference head with a head insertion hole formed in the base is also provided.

A method for incorporating a disk medium into a magnetic disk drive, in which the rotation center of the disk medium when a servo track information is written onto the disk medium (STW) coincides with the rotation center thereof when the disk medium is incorporated into the disk apparatus. A reference marker is provided as a positioning reference on a part of the disk medium. The disk medium is incorporated into a STW apparatus so that STW is performed on the disk medium. The disk medium is also incorporated into the magnetic disk drive in such a manner that a distance from an axis of rotation center of the disk medium to the reference marker is the same as when the STW was performed onto the disk medium.

Method for incorporating disk media into magnetic disk drive

A spindle motor has a simple structure that is usable with a base having sufficient rigidity and enables heads to sandwich each recording disk outside the base. The spindle motor for rotating the disks and an actuator for driving the heads are assembled on the base into a disk drive. A rotor assembly of the spindle motor consists of a stationary shaft separable from the base, bearings attached around the stationary shaft, a hub installed around the bearings, a yoke attached to the hub, magnets attached to the yoke, and magnetic seals arranged at the top and bottom of the bearings, to seal the inside of the hub from the atmosphere in the disk drive. The stationary shaft has a skirt serving as a positioner for positioning the rotor assembly with respect to the base. The base has a hole for receiving the stationary shaft and stator coils concentrically arranged around the hole. The stationary shaft of the rotor assembly is engaged with the hole of the base, to complete the spindle motor.

Disclosed is a magnetic disk apparatus constructed to reduce a track positional deviation of a magnetic head. This magnetic disk apparatus includes a rotary mechanism for rotating the magnetic disk and a rotary type actuator, provided with the magnetic head at its front end, which magnetic head has a write head and a read head, for moving the magnetic head in such a direction as to traverse tracks of the magnetic disk by making rotations about a rotary shaft. A distance A from the center of rotation of the rotary type actuator to the magnetic head is set equal to or larger than a distance B from the center of rotation of the rotary type actuator to the center of rotation of the magnetic disk. Even when separating a write element and a read element, the track positional deviation of the magnetic head can be reduced. This magnetic disk apparatus includes an enclosure accommodating both of a rotary mechanism and the rotary type actuator and having a base taking such a configuration that one side surface thereof is opened and a cover fitted in the base, wherein a side for separating the base and the cover is formed at a slant to a long side of the apparatus. This construction makes it possible to enhance a rigidity of the enclosure and reduce the track positional deviation of the magnetic head.

Magnetic disk apparatus

A rotary type actuator for a magnetic disk device includes a magnetic head that traverses tracks of the magnetic disk as the actuator rotates about a rotary shaft. The rotary type actuator has at least one arm for the magnetic head at its front end. A first flat cable has one end connected to the rotary type actuator, for making an electrical connection to the electronics in the disk device. A second flat cable is provided on the side surface of the arm, for electrically connecting the magnetic head to the first flat cable. The first flat cable includes a plurality of lands arranged along an extended direction of the arm. The second flat cable includes a first land group provided at one end of the second flat cable for electrically connecting to the magnetic head. The first land group has a plurality of lands arranged along an extended direction of the arm. A second land group is provided at the other end of the second flat cable for electrically connecting to the first flat cable. The second land group has a plurality of lands arranged along the extended direction of the arm, disposed in face-to-face relationship with the lands of the first flat cable, and a lead pattern is provided for electrically connecting the first land group and the second land group. In this manner, the second flat cable overlaps with the first flat cable at the other end.

Flat cable connecting system for rotary type actuators in magnetic disk

A rotary driving apparatus controls the generation of vibration and noise due to high speed rotation, to realize high accuracy rotation, so that a storage apparatus such as a disk drive can have high speed rotation and improved storing density on its recording medium. The apparatus includes a fixed shaft for rotatably supporting a rotor, a bearing fitted between the shaft and the rotor, at least two projections projecting from the surface of the shaft, and a stator coil mounted on the projections. The projections absorb stator vibration, and isolate the head, the storage disk and other parts from the stator vibrations. A gap area is formed between the stator coil and the shaft to dampen vibrations created by the stator. The gap may be filled with vibration-absorbing material.
