A composition is provided that contains an intermediate for a water-soluble monomer, wherein this intermediate is suitable for producing a water-soluble polyalkylene glycol-type monomer that has a polymerizable terminal double bond, and suitable for the production of water-soluble polymer, and moreover allows the high-yield production of water-soluble polymer. A process of producing this composition and a water-soluble monomer-containing composition obtained therefrom are also provided. A water-soluble monomer is also provided that can be used as a starting material for a water-soluble polymer that even at high hardnesses exhibits an excellent capacity to capture metal ions such as the calcium ion and magnesium ion, an excellent anti-gelation performance, an excellent anti-soil redeposition performance, a better anti-dye transfer performance than in the past, and also an excellent compatibility with surfactants. A production process is also provided that can produce such a water-soluble monomer at higher yields and higher selectivities (higher purities) than in the past. An &#x3b1;-(unsaturated alkoxyalkyl)acrylate composition is provided which enables an &#x3b1;-(unsaturated alkoxyalkyl)acrylate product to be stored at a high purity for an extended period of time and can fully suppress problems such as discoloration and gelation from arising during polymerization, and a method of safely preparing &#x3b1;-(unsaturated alkoxyalkyl)acrylate compositions industrially, with high purity. The composition includes an &#x3b1;-(unsaturated alkoxyalkyl)acrylate of a specific structure and an antioxidant, the content of the antioxidant being from 0.03 to 0.5 wt % per 100 wt % of the &#x3b1;-(unsaturated alkoxyalkyl)acrylate.

A stabilization method of a vinyl compound with hydroxy group of an improved stability is achieved by preventing it from being denatured on storage, transportation, manufacturing process while maintaining its reactivity. A composition containing the vinyl compound with hydroxy group of an improved stability is obtained by the described stabilization method. The stabilization method is characterized by coexisting a vinyl compound with hydroxy group of formula (1), a primary antioxidant, alcohol and/or water, ##STR1## wherein R is a hydrogen atom or an organic residue, X is a --CN group, a --COR.sub.0 group or a --COOR.sub.0 group, and R.sub.0 is a hydrogen atom or an organic residue. In this stabilization method, not less than 50 ppm of alcohol and/or water is added with respect to the vinyl compound with hydroxy group. The stabilization method may be achieved by coexisting the above-defined vinyl compound with hydroxy group, the primary antioxidant and organic acid. In this case, not less than 10 ppm of organic acid is added to the vinyl compound with hydroxy group.

A vinyl compound having a hydroxy group of the formula (1) ##STR1## wherein R is a hydrogen atom or an organic residue, X is a --CN group, a --COR.sub.0 group or a --COOR.sub.0 group and R.sub.0 is a hydrogen atom or an organic residue, is prepared by reacting a vinyl compound of the formula (2) ##STR2## wherein X is a --CN group, a --COR.sub.0 group or a --COOR.sub.0 group and R.sub.0 is a hydrogen atom or an organic residue, with an aldehyde series compound in the presence of a tertiary amine compound, and water in a sufficient amount for forming an aqueous phase upon the completion of the reaction. In this method, since the aqueous phase is formed upon the completion of the reaction, the organic phase including the vinyl compound having a hydroxy group and the aqueous phase including the tertiary amine compound can be easily separated.
