A chemically disinfected sewage sludge-containing material comprising (1) an aqueous slurry of sewage sludge-containing material having a solids content in the range of about 10 to 30 wt. %; and (2) a chemical disinfectant comprising a water soluble silicate of sodium in the amount of 5 to 20 wt. % (basis dry wt. of said sewage sludge). In one embodiment, a pumpable chemically disinfected sewage sludge-containing material was produced by the steps of (1) dewatering sewage sludge to produce an aqueous slurry having a solids content of about 10 to 30 wt. %; (2) shearing the dewatered sewage sludge from (1) at a temperature in the range of about ambient to 230.degree. F. and at a shear rate of at least 30 per second for a period in the range of about 0.5 to 180 minutes; and (3) mixing the following materials together at a temperature in the range of about ambient to 230.degree. F. to produce a pumpable aqueous slurry having a solids content in the range of about 30 to 65 wt. % and a pH of at least about 11: (a) about 0.5 to 7 parts by wt. of sheared dewatered sewage sludge from (2); (b) about 5 to 20 wt. % of a silicate of sodium (basis total dry weight of sewage sludge); and (c) about 5 to 7 parts by wt. of at least one material from the group consisting of sewage sludge-containing material, liquid hydrocarbonaceous fuel, solid carbonaceous fuel-containing material, and mixtures thereof.

Chemically disinfected sewage sludge-containing materials

Mixtures of hydrogen and hydrocarbons may be separated by a membrane formed of a thin dense layer of platinum or palladium on the inside of a porous graphite tube.

Gases such as hydrogen/hydrocarbon may be separated by a separating membrane of a Group VIII noble metal on a deposit of non-noble Group VIII metal which is supported on a porous silver or a porous carbon body.

Gas mixtures such as H.sub.2 /CO.sub.2 may be separated by passage through a filter bed of nanocrystalline ceramic particles on a bed of alumina particles.

Method of forming separation membranes

A partial oxidation process and a novel burner are provided for simultaneously introducing two or three separate feedstreams into a free-flow partial oxidation gas generator for the production of synthesis gas and fuel gas, or reducing gas. The reactant feedstreams include a liquid hydrocarbonaceous fuel or a pumpable slurry of solid carbonaceous fuel, and a free-oxygen containing gas e.g. air or oxygen. The burner comprises a central conduit and a plurality of spaced concentric coaxial conduits with down-flowing annular passages. A flat annular-shaped disc or cup-shaped porous ceramic or porous metal cooling means of uniform composition, wall thickness and porosity with the various pores interconnecting is attached to the downstream tip of the burner. A controlled amount of liquid coolant under pressure is passed successively through the porous inside surface, porous core and porous outside surface of the cooling means is vaporized. The tip of the burner is thereby cooled. Stress cracking of the burner tip is prevented; and the life of the burner is extended. Further, deposition of ash on the face of the burner is prevented.

A process for the partial oxidation of a sulfur- and silicate-containing carbonaceous fuel to produce a synthesis gas with reduced sulfur content which comprises partially oxidizing said fuel at a temperature in the range of 1900.degree.-2600.degree. F. in the presence of a temperature moderator, an oxygen-containing gas and a sulfur capture additive which comprises a calcium-containing compound portion, a sodium-containing compound portion, and a fluoride-containing compound portion to produce a synthesis gas comprising H.sub.2 and CO with a reduced sulfur content and a molten slag which comprises (1) a sulfur-containing sodium-calcium-fluoride silicate phase; and (2) a sodium-calcium sulfide phase.

Mixture of gases such as hydrogen/carbon dioxide may be separated by use of membrane formed by reaction of an aluminum alkoxide with steam at high temperatures and pressures.

Separation by membrane techniques

A novel membrane system, including a layer of platinum or palladium on graphite, is used to separate hydrogen from a hydrocarbon stream.

Vanadium garnet materials and a method for their preparation. The vanadium garnet material has a trivalent vanadium cation and a composition that falls within a specific prismatic-shaped volume in a quaternary composition diagram of MnO, CaO, V.sub.2 O.sub.3, and SiO.sub.2. In the process, specific amounts of separately pre-heated V.sub.2 O.sub.3, MnO, CaO and SiO.sub.2 powders are ground and mixed together, pelletized, heated at a temperature in the range of about 1100.degree. C. to 1400.degree. C. for 12 to 48 hours in an atmosphere of carefully selected oxygen pressure comprising a gas mixture of high purity CO.sub.2 and H.sub.2 to produce a liquid melt, and cooling, crystallizing out and separating said vanadium garnet material. A typical vanadium garnet material has the formula Mn.sub.1.3 Ca.sub.1.7 V.sub.2 Si.sub.3 O.sub.12. The vanadium garnet materials may be used in laser applications.

A porous support layer is loaded with blocking liquid, such as an alcohol, prior to contact with an aluminum alkoxide to form thereon a layer of alumina which is dried and calcined to yield a membrane suitable for separation of gases.

Method of forming membranes useful for separation of gases

Charge compositions containing aqueous mixtures of organic oxygenates may be separated by pervaporation through a membrane assembly containing a porous ceramic support bearing as separating layer, a membrane of cured polyvinyl alcohol which has been cross-linked as with glutaraldehyde.

The present invention pertains to novel phases involving FeO, V.sub.2 O.sub.3 and CaO and the method for their preparation. The solid compositions involving FeO--V.sub.2 O.sub.3 --CaO fall within the shaded area of a polygon in a ternary composition diagram of FeO, V.sub.2 O.sub.3 and CaO as shown in the drawing herein e.g., FIG. 1. The compositions may be used as a catalyst for oxidation or reduction reactions.

The present invention pertains to novel vanadium spinel materials and a method for their preparation. Each vanadium spinel material has a trivalent vanadium cation and is crystallized from a liquid having a composition that falls within a specific polygon shaped area in a ternary composition diagram of V.sub.2 O.sub.3 -FeO-SiO.sub.2 as shown in the drawing herein e.g., FIG. 1. The compositions may be used as a catalyst for oxidation reactions.

Vanadium garnet materials and a method for their preparation. The vanadium garnet material has a trivalent vanadium cation and a composition that falls within a specific prismatic-shaped volume in a quaternary composition diagram of MnO, CaO, V.sub.2 O.sub.3, and SiO.sub.2. The prismatic-shaped volume represents compositions of liquids with which said vanadium garnet is in equilibrium on the liquidus surface and from which the vanadium garnet phase is crystallized. A typical vanadium garnet material has the formula Mn.sub.1.3 Ca.sub.1.7 V.sub.2 Si.sub.3 O.sub.12, as provided in the drawing by point F. The vanadium garnet materials may be used in laser applications.
