A method comprises receiving a request to configure a temporary cache associated with at least one storage array and configuring the temporary cache in response to the request. In the method, the temporary cache is exposed to a tiering software portion of a tiering appliance for a designated time period, and a portion of data from one or more cloud storage platforms is stored in the temporary cache. The method also includes retrieving the portion of the data from the temporary cache in response to one or more read requests from one or more user devices, and removing the temporary cache in response to expiration of the designated time period.

Transient caching to support short-term recall of tiered files

An apparatus includes a processing device configured to identify a snapshot policy for creating a snapshot lineage comprising snapshots of a storage volume comprising data stored on a storage system, the snapshot lineage comprising (i) a local snapshot lineage stored on the storage system and (ii) at least one cloud snapshot lineage stored on cloud storage. The processing device is also configured to generate snapshots of the storage volume in accordance with the snapshot policy, to store the snapshots in the local snapshot lineage, and to copy snapshots from the local snapshot lineage to the at least one cloud snapshot lineage in accordance with the at least one snapshot policy. The processing device is further configured to provide an interface for managing the snapshot lineage by accessing, from the storage system, snapshots of the storage volume in the local snapshot lineage and the at least one cloud snapshot lineage.

Managing snapshots stored locally in a storage system and in cloud storage utilizing policy-based snapshot lineages

An apparatus comprises a processing device configured to identify a snapshot lineage comprising (i) a local snapshot lineage stored on a storage system and (ii) a cloud snapshot lineage stored on cloud storage of at least one cloud external to the storage system. The processing device is also configured to select a snapshot to be copied from the local snapshot lineage to the cloud snapshot lineage, and to copy the selected snapshot by copying data stored in the local snapshot lineage to a checkpointing cache and, responsive to determining that the copied data in the checkpointing cache has reached a specified checkpoint size, moving the copied data from the checkpointing cache to the cloud storage. The processing device is further configured to maintain, in the checkpointing cache, checkpointing information utilizable for pausing and resuming copying of the selected snapshot from the local snapshot lineage to the cloud snapshot lineage.
