A subsea tubular system comprises extended sections of a first material and interposed sections of a second, different material that aids in damping vibration resulting from subsea dynamic conditions such as current. The vibration damping sections may make up a portion of the overall system significantly less than the sections of the first material. The number, length, and positions of the vibration damping sections may be selected based on factors such as the diameter, overall length, profile, and so forth. The system may be used as a riser or other conduit for the production of minerals such as oil and gas.

Vibration damping subsea tubular system

A test system includes subsystems for application to a test sample of a range of conditions that might be encountered in an actual application. Conditions may include the presence of particular fluid environments, temperatures, pressures, and mechanical loads including tensile and bending loads. The system is particularly suited for elongated samples such as tubular products used in oil and gas applications, though a range of samples may be tested.

Dynamic autoclave testing system

A threaded product is provided having an external thread form on a tubular pin member comprises load and stab flanks on either side of a crest, along with smooth transitions between the crest and flanks. An elliptical root between the flanks aids in reducing stress and forms a dope volume between a non-conforming crest of an internal thread form of a tubular box member. Flanks of the internal thread of the box member contact flanks of the external thread of the pin member to form areas of mating contact on either side of the thread.

Thread form and threaded article

A modular tubular system is assembled of a tool handling section and a tubular section. The tool handling section may be made of a material that is suitable for handling by conventional tubular handling tools, such as conventional steel. The tubular section may be made of a different material with desired properties for special applications in a well, such as aluminum, titanium, nickel, or stainless steel alloys, or composite materials. A joint, such as a pin tool joint may be assembled on an end of the tubular section opposite the tool handling section to allow the modular system to be joined with mating tubular products, both conventional and modular. The resulting system provides advantages of the different material of the tubular section while allowing for more robust handling and ease of integration via the handling section.

Modular tubular product for well applications

A riser for a subsea well comprises a first riser section that may be similar to conventional risers in design and material specifications. A second riser section comprises a passive fracture section that is specifically designed to shear or fracture under design conditions, such as extreme events (e.g., extreme weather or waves, loss of control of a rig or vessel, a rig or vessel moving from a desired position). The passive fracture section is designed to fracture first to prevent or minimize damage to other well equipment, such as at the seabed.

Shearable riser system and method

A tubular string for a subterranean well comprises a first string that is located in the well and that can access or traverse horizons of interest, such as during drilling, completion, or workover. A second tubular string is assembled above this first tubular string and is selected so that only this second tubular string normally traverses a blow out preventer during periods when there is an elevated risk that the blow out preventer will be actuated. The second tubular string is made of a more easily shearable material than the first tubular string, such as a titanium alloy, an aluminum alloy, or a composite material. A third or further tubular strings may be assembled above the second tubular string, such as in subsea applications.

Shearable tubular system and method

A drill string is comprised of a vibration damping drill pipe section, made of a material such as aluminum alloy, titanium, composite material, or ductile iron, for example, and another drill pipe section made of a different material, such as conventional steel. The vibration damping drill pipe section may be place in any desired location, such as near sensitive equipment, such as a bottom hole assembly. Additional vibration damping sections may be interspersed with conventional drill pipe. The vibration damping drill pipe helps to reduce vibration experienced by the drill string during drilling, particularly torsional and lateral vibration.

Vibration reducing drill string system and method

Axle shaft assemblies for use with a vehicle include a shaft formed from a first material having a first modulus of elasticity for providing the shaft with a flexibility adapted to withstand side impacts and resist deformation. A first end member can be engaged with a first end of the shaft, and a second end member can be engaged with the second end of the shaft. The end members can be formed from a second material having a second modulus of elasticity greater than the first, such that the end members are adapted to withstand a rotational force. The end members can include splined connectors, hub flanges, and other similar components. The resulting axle shaft assembly can thereby include modular combinations of materials having low and high moduli of elasticity.

Modular axle shaft assemblies for use with racing vehicles and other vehicles

Axle shaft assemblies for use with a vehicle include a tubular shaft formed from a material having a first modulus of elasticity. A first insert is positioned within the longitudinal cavity of the shaft at a first end, the first insert having a thickness adapted to provide the first end tubular shaft with a greater modulus of elasticity for providing a suspension characteristic to the vehicle. A second insert having the selected thickness is positioned at a second end of the shaft. Interchangeability of the inserts enables a single lightweight shaft of generally thin, continuous wall thickness to be adapted with a variety of suspension characteristics, without replacing the shaft itself, while the low modulus of elasticity of the shaft facilitates the flexibility of the axle assembly and the ability of the axle to withstand impacts without deformation.

Axle shaft system for use with go-karts and other vehicles

Modular stress joints usable to compensate for forces applied to a subsea riser or other structure include a base member and one or more additional members. Members having desired lengths can be selected such that the sum of the length of the base member and additional members defines a desired total length. Members having desired wall thicknesses can be selected such that a combination of the wall thicknesses of the base member and each additional member defines an overall wall thickness or stiffness. The total length, overall wall thickness, or both correspond to expected forces applied to the subsea riser or structure, such that the stress joint is adapted to compensate for the forces and prevent damage. The number or length of members used and their thickness or other characteristics can be varied to provide multiple lengths and stiffnesses, such that the stress joint is modular and reconfigurable.
