The disclosure provides self-dispersing pigment having an isoelectric point of at least about 8 comprising an inorganic particle, and in particular a titanium dioxide (TiO) pigment, treated sequentially by: hydrolyzing an aluminum compound or basic aluminate to deposit a hydrous alumina surface; and adding a dual-functional compound comprising an anchoring group that attaches the dual-functional compound to the pigment surface, and a basic amine group comprising a primary, secondary or tertiary amine. These self-dispersing pigments are useful in making d&#xe9;cor paper that may be used in paper laminates.

Self-dispersing pigments

A d&#xe9;cor paper is prepared from a dispersion having improved optical performance, wherein the dispersion contains a TiOparticle slurry; paper pulp; and a cationic polymer. The TiOparticle slurry has a treated TiOparticle with a surface area of at least about 30 m/g and a cationic polymer; the treatment is an oxide of silicon, aluminum, phosphorus or mixtures thereof; and the treatment is present in the amount of at least 15% based on the total weight of the treated titanium dioxide particle. Comparable dispersions not using the TiOparticle slurry described would require about 10% more treated TiOparticle than a dispersion made with the described TiOparticle slurry, paper pulp, and cationic polymer to achieve equivalent optical performance. These d&#xe9;cor papers are useful in preparing paper laminates.

Process for making a d&#xe9;cor paper having improved optical performance

The disclosure provides a paper laminate comprising a d&#xe9;cor paper prepared from a dispersion having improved optical performance without negatively impacting mechanical strength, wherein the dispersion comprises a TiOparticle slurry comprising a treated TiOparticle having a surface area of at least about 30 m/g, and a cationic polymer; wherein the treatment comprises an oxide of silicon, aluminum, phosphorus or mixtures thereof; and the treatment is present in the amount of at least 15% based on the total weight of the treated titanium dioxide particle; paper pulp; and a cationic polymer; wherein the cationic polymer in the slurry and the cationic polymer in the dispersion are compatible; wherein for equal optical performance, the amount of treated TiOparticle in the dispersion is reduced by about 10% when compared to a dispersion not comprising the treated TiOparticle of (a).

Paper laminates made from decor paper having improved optical performance comprising treated inorganic particles

D&#xe9;cor paper having improved optical performance comprising treated inorganic particles

The disclosure provides a process for preparing a self-dispersing pigment having an isoelectric point of at least about 8 comprising: (a) adding a dual functional compound with an acidic aluminum salt to form an aqueous solution, wherein the dual functional compound comprises an anchoring group that attaches the dual-functional compound to the pigment surface, and a basic amine group comprising a primary, secondary or tertiary amine; (b) adding a base to the mixture from step (a) whereby the pH is raised to about 4 to about 9 to form a turbid solution; and (c) adding the mixture from step (b) to a slurry of inorganic particles whereby a hydrous alumina and the dual functional compound are deposited on the pigment surface. The self-dispersing pigments prepared by this process are useful in making d&#xe9;cor paper that may be used in paper laminates.

Process for preparing self-dispersing pigments

Disclosed is a d&#xe9;cor paper with a self-dispersing pigment having an isoelectric point of at least about 8, where the inorganic particle is treated sequentially by (a) hydrolyzing an aluminum compound or basic aluminate to deposit a hydrous alumina surface and (b) adding a dual-functional compound. The dual functional compound has an anchoring group that attaches to the pigment surface and a basic amine group. Typically, the inorganic particle is titanium dioxide, TiO. These d&#xe9;cor papers are useful in making paper laminates.

Decor paper comprising self-dispersing pigments

Disclosed is a paper laminate made from a d&#xe9;cor paper, wherein the d&#xe9;cor paper has a self-dispersing pigment with an isoelectric point of at least about 8. Dispersions made from treated inorganic particles for making decor paper having improved optical performance

The disclosure provides a process for removing dissolved niobium, titanium, and zirconium impurities from an iron chloride solution having an iron concentration of about 50 to about 250 grams/liter comprising: (a) heating the iron chloride solution comprising a compound selected from the group consisting of a niobium compound, titanium compound, zirconium compound, and mixtures thereof, in a vessel, at a temperature of about 120&#xb0; C. to about 300&#xb0; C., and at least autogenous pressure, to precipitate the compound as a solid; and (b) separating the solid from the iron chloride solution. The separation of the solid is accomplished by filtration, settling, or centrifugation. In one embodiment, the iron chloride solution is a byproduct of the chlorination process for making titanium dioxide.
