Local color correction to color values which result from processing of images within a Color Management System (CMS) is implemented by adjusting existing fields and tags within a color profile. A source image is rendered on a source digital imaging device, and the same or a different image is manipulated by the CMS then rendered on a destination digital imaging device. The CMS uses predetermined color profiles associated with the source and destination devices. The technique is useful when the manipulated image rendered on the destination device has a number of color regions which the user determines are unacceptably different in appearance from the source rendered image. Depending upon the embodiment being practiced, either spectrophotometric or colorimetric measurements or onscreen identifications are made of the respective error regions within the two rendered images and the user is enabled to indicate preferred color matching results. Based upon these measurements and user input, the original profiles are modified to improve the CMS quality performance as judged by the user.

User-interactive corrective tuning of color profiles

A system and method can generate a singular solution where a color is represented by an unique set of values in a first color space corresponding to more than one set of values which represent the same color in a second color space. One preferred method determines a singular set of colorant values from an N dimensional system for a given set of values from an N minus M dimensional system, 1.ltoreq.M&lt;N, where a function which describes a transformation from the N dimensional system to the N minus M dimensional system is predefined, and the method includes the steps of: defining a first predetermined error function based on the N minus M dimensional system; defining a second predetermined error function based on the N dimensional system; defining one of the error functions as a primary error function and the other as a secondary error function by applying predetermined weighting functions thereto; combining the primary and secondary error functions; and determining a set of values from the N dimensional system by minimizing the combined error functions.

A method and system for facilitating image transfer between transform spaces by establishing a configurable, extensible, integrated profile generation and maintenance environment in a computer system includes the steps of providing a profile generation environment, a profile viewing environment, a profile editing environment, and a profile validation environment. The software for implementing the profile generation integrates each of the available environments, is configured to cause a desired sequence of steps to take place, and is extensible by allowing the addition or modification of capabilities without the need to update the main software program in terms of recompilation or relinking.
