This invention is an improved method and device for treating varicose veinsor the greater saphenous vein. The method comprises the use of infrared laser radiation in the region of 1.2 to 1.8 um in a manner from inside the vesselorsuch that the endothelial cells of the vessel wallare damaged and collagen fibers in the vessel wallare heated to the point where they permanently contract, the vesseloris occluded and ultimately resorbed. The device includes a laserdelivered via a fiber optic catheterthat may have frosted or diffusing fiber tips. A motorized pull-back deviceis used, and a thermal sensormay be used to help control the power required to maintain the proper treatment temperature.

System and method for endovenous treatment of varicose veins with mid infrared laser

A method and apparatus for treating skin disorders includes a source of pulsed near black body electromagnetic energy and a means of delivering this energy to a treatment site. A means for cooling the treatment site is described. The number of pulses and intensity of the energy can be varied. Optical filters are used to limit the spectrum of energy emitted and the filters are cooled to allow high-energy operation. The size of the treatment spot is controlled by a series of apertures.
