A wire sorting system identifies and sorts wire from mixed electronic waste solely by the shape of the wire. A digital image of a stream of articles is created, and the image data may be processed using a Gabor filter technique to identify elongated narrow objects such as wire.

Optical wire sorting

A paper sorting system allows the high speed determination of the presence of printed matter for individual sheets of paper in a stream of waste paper. Sorting criteria may be selected by a user from a plurality of predefined options to sort the paper stream. The selected category of paper to be sorted may include newspaper or magazines.

Multi-grade object sorting system and method

A paper sorting system allows the high speed determination of color, glossiness and the presence of printed matter for individual sheets of paper in a stream of waste paper. Sorting criteria may be selected from a plurality of predefined options to sort the paper stream.

A system for sorting articles includes a feed conveyor for launching the articles across an airspace toward a first destination. A light source shines light energy on the articles in the airspace. A collector collects light energy reflected from the articles. A deflector is provided for deflecting selected articles toward an alternative destination as the articles fly across the airspace. A control system is operably connected to the collector and the deflector for actuating the deflector in response to a sensed parameter, such as an electromagnetic radiation frequency spectrum, of the light energy collected in the collector. Preferably, this system is utilized with a retro-reflector located on an opposite side of the airspace from the light source and the collector. This system also preferably includes the use of a multi-plexer which allows a single analyzer unit to be utilized to analyze light signals from each of a large plurality of collector units of the collector.

The present invention discloses an electromagnetic source which transmits electromagnetic radiation to an object. The electromagnetic radiation then either passes through the object or is reflected by the object depending upon the electromagnetic source and the type of the object. The reflected or penetrating radiation, depending upon the type of application, is picked up by a receiver. The receiver then sends the penetrating or reflected signal into a splitter which divides it into a first and second stream or a third and fourth stream, if necessary. After each of these streams, the split signal can then be run through a filter before it is analyzed by a sensor. The sensor reading is then fed into a microprocessor which compares, combines, and evaluates the various readings.

System and method for distinguishing an item from a group of items

In the present invention, a system and method are disclosed for distinguishing PEN from other types of materials. The method and system discloses an electromagnetic radiation source which transmits electromagnetic radiation to an object. The electromagnetic radiation either passing through an object or rejecting from an object is then measured to determine the amount of penetrating or reflecting electromagnetic radiation. This amount of penetrating or reflecting electromagnetic radiation is then measured to classify the item by type.

Method for distinguishing pen from other materials

A method of providing electronic shielding comprising providing a layer of a polyaniline composition on the object to be shielded, whereby the entrance and egress of electromagnetic radiation is prevented. Also presented herein is a method of changing the absorption by a polyaniline composition of electromagnetic radiation by modifying the chemical structure and crystallinographic order of the polyaniline composition, wherein said composition comprises a composition of the formula ##STR1## where y can be equal to or greater than zero, and R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 are independently selected from the group consisting of --H, --OCH.sub.3, --F, --Cl, --Br, --I, --NR.sup.3.sub.2, --NHCOR.sup.3, --OH, --O, --SR.sup.3, --OR.sup.3, --OCOR.sup.3, --NO.sub.2, --COOH, --COOR.sup.3, --R.sup.3 SO.sub.3 H, --COR.sup.3, --CHO, and --CN, where R.sup.3 is a C.sub.1 to C.sub.8 alkyl, aryl, or aralkyl group.

Electromagnetic radiation absorbers and modulators comprising polyaniline

A method is provided for absorbing electromagnetic radiation using a polyaniline composition, wherein the radiation is infrared, visible light, ultraviolet, radar, or microwave radiation. Also provided is a method for reducing the detectability by radar of an object by increasing the absorption of radar waves and thereby decrease the reflection of the radar waves by applying to the object a polyaniline composition or a partially protonated salt thereof.

A composition for absorbing electromagnetic radiation (such as microwave, infrared, visible light radiation ultraviolet radiation), wherein said electromagnetic radiation possesses a wavelength generally in the range of from about 1000 Angstroms to about 50 meters, wherein said composition comprises a polyaniline composition of the formula ##STR1## where y can be equal to or greater than zero and R' and R.sub.2 are independently selected from the group consisting of --H, --OCH.sub.3, --CH.sub.3, --F, --Cl, --Br, --I, --NR.sup.3.sub.2, --NHCOR.sub.3, --OH, --O, --SR.sup.3, --OR.sup.3, --OCOR.sup.3, --NO.sub.2, --COOH, --COOR.sup.3, --COR.sup.3, --CHO, and --CN, where R.sup.3 is a C.sub.1 to C.sub.a alkyl, aryl or aralkyl group.
