An optical device includes a plurality of optical ports for receiving optical beams. The optical device also includes a plurality of toric micro lenses each receiving one of the optical beams from a respective one of the optical ports. A dispersion element is provided for spatially separating in a dispersion plane the optical beam into a plurality of wavelength components. At least one focusing element is provided for focusing the plurality of wavelength components. A programmable optical phase modulator is also provided for receiving the focused plurality of wavelength components. The modulator is configured to selectively direct the wavelength components to prescribed ones of the optical ports. The toric lenses impart positive power to the optical beams in the port plane and negative optical power to the optical beams in a plane orthogonal to the port plane.

Toroidal micro lens array for use in a wavelength selective switch

An optical device includes an optical port array, a first walk-off crystal, a first half-wave plate, a second walk-off crystal and a segmented half-wave plate. The optical port array has a first and second plurality of ports for receiving optical beams. The first walk-off crystal spatially separates the beams into first and second portions that are in first and second orthogonal polarization states, respectively. The first portions are walked-off by the first walk-off crystal and the second portions pass therethrough without being walked-off. The first half-wave plate rotates the polarization state of the first and second portions of the optical beams. The second walk-off crystal is oriented in an opposite direction from the first walk-off crystal such that the second portions are walked-off by the second walk-off crystal and the first portions pass therethrough without being walked-off. The segmented half-wave plate receives the first or second portions of the beams.

Launch optics with optical path compensation for a wavelength selective switch

An optical launch arrangement includes a fiber assembly for securing an array of optical fibers. The optical launch arrangement also includes an asymmetric lenslet array having a first surface with a pair of coupling lenses in registration with each optical fiber in the array of optical fibers and a second surface with a collimating lens in registration with each pair of coupling lenses.

An optical arrangement includes an actuatable optical element and a compensating optical element. The actuatable optical element is provided to receive an optical beam having a plurality of spatially separated wavelength components and diffract the plurality of wavelength components in a wavelength dependent manner. The compensating optical element directs the optical beam to the actuatable optical element. The compensating optical element compensates for the wavelength dependent manner in which the wavelength components are diffracted by the actuatable optical element.

A channel detection system includes an interferometer coupled to a spectrum analyzer to differentiate additive spontaneous emission (ASE) noise from optical channels in a dense wave-division multiplex (DWDM) signal. It is assumed that channels, if present, are centered at frequencies corresponding to a standardized channel grid. The relative delay of the interferometer is chosen to be greater than the coherence time of the ASE noise but less than the coherence time of the channels with the interferometer's free spectral range set to an integer divisor of the channel-to-channel frequency spacing of the grid such that active channels experience a high degree of interference. The phase delay of the interferometer is then adjusted to maximize the interference at each grid-aligned frequency. The spectrum-analyzed outputs are compared (e.g., subtracted from one another and then thresholded) to determine the channels present in the DWDM signal.
