A method for normalizing a chemical tracer response in a zone can include measuring a concentration of the tracer as produced from a proximal zone, measuring a concentration of a reference tracer as produced from the proximal zone, and applying a mathematical correction to a concentration of the tracer as produced from the zone. Another method can include normalizing a chemical tracer concentration to a reference tracer concentration, and then allocating flow to a zone corresponding to the tracer based on the normalized tracer concentration. Another method can include injecting a first chemical tracer into a first wellbore reference zone and into additional producing zones of the first wellbore, injecting a second chemical tracer into a second wellbore reference zone and into additional producing zones of the second wellbore, and injecting a third chemical tracer into each of the additional producing zones of the first and second wellbores.

Method to determine tracer response from non-ideal chemical tracers

A tracer injection system can include a tracer solution, a pump configured to pump the tracer solution, a data transmitter associated with the tracer solution, a data receiver configured to receive tracer characteristic data from the data transmitter, and a pump controller that variably operates the pump, based at least in part on the tracer characteristic data received by the data receiver. A tracer injection method can include associating a data transmitter with a container and a tracer solution in the container, so that the data transmitter is transported with the container and the tracer solution, receiving from the data transmitter data indicative of a characteristic of the tracer solution, and pumping the tracer solution from the container at a flow rate based at least in part on the received data.

A system, method and device for interrogating a downhole environment in a borehole beneath a surface includes a source of electromagnetic energy, operable to transmit an electromagnetic signal in the borehole, a sensor module, including a passive resonating circuit including a crystal oscillator having a resonant frequency that varies with changes in the condition in the downhole environment to reflect the electromagnetic signal and to modulate the electromagnetic signal in response to a condition in the downhole environment in the borehole and a detector positionable to receive the reflected modulated electromagnetic signal. Embodiments include a power monitor and circuitry configured and arranged to measure an input frequency at a time when an inflection in the applied power is observed.

System and method for measurement incorporating a crystal resonator

A system, method and device for interrogating a downhole environment in a borehole beneath a surface includes a source of electromagnetic energy, operable to transmit an electromagnetic signal in the borehole, a sensor module, including a passive resonator having a resonant frequency that varies with changes in the condition in the downhole environment to reflect the electromagnetic signal and generates harmonic frequencies in response to a condition in the downhole environment in the borehole and a detector positionable to receive a returned electromagnetic signal. Embodiments include a filter to pass a harmonic of the resonant frequency of the resonating circuit and circuitry configured and arranged to measure the frequency of the harmonic signal.

Sneak path elimination in diode multiplexed control of downhole well tools. A system for selectively actuating multiple well tools includes a control device for each tool, a well tool being operable by selecting a respective control device; conductors connected to the control devices, which are selectable by applying a predetermined voltage across a respective predetermined pair of the conductors; and at least one lockout device for each control device, the lockout devices preventing current from flowing through the respective control devices when voltage across the respective predetermined pair of the conductors is less than a predetermined minimum. A method includes selecting a well tools for actuation by applying a predetermined minimum voltage to a set of conductors; and preventing actuation of another well tool when the predetermined minimum voltage is not applied across another set of conductors, at least one conductor being common to the two sets of conductors.

Sneak path eliminator for diode multiplexed control of downhole well tools

Position indication in multiplexed downhole well tools. A method of selectively actuating and indicating a position in a well includes selecting at least one well tool from among multiple well tools for actuation by flowing direct current in one direction through a set of conductors in the well, the well tool being deselected for actuation when direct current flows through the set of conductors in an opposite direction; and detecting a varying resistance across the set of conductors as the selected well tool is actuated, the variation in resistance providing an indication of a position of a portion of the selected well tool.

Position indicating multiplexed control system and method for downhole well tools

A system for selectively actuating multiple load devices, such as well tools, which are selectively actuated by applying a predetermined voltage across a predetermined pair of conductors. At least one lockout device is associated with each load device. The lockout device prevents current from flowing through the respective load device until voltage across the pair of the conductors exceeds a predetermined minimum. A method is provided for selecting well tools for actuation by applying a minimum voltage across a set of conductors and a lockout device. Leak paths are prevented from draining off current by the lockout devices. A system is provided for applying current to bidirectional load devices such as downhole pumps and motors.

A system, method and device may be used to monitor fluid levels in a borehole. The system includes a pulse generator to generate a pulse of electromagnetic energy to propagate along the wellbore towards a surface of the fluid, a detector to detect a portion of the electromagnetic pulse reflected from the surface of the fluid and propagated along the wellbore towards the detector, a processor to analyze detected signals to determine a level of the surface of the fluid. In an embodiment, the system includes a pump controller to control the operation of a pump located in the wellbore based on the fluid surface level.

System and method for sensing a liquid level

A method of selectively actuating from a remote location multiple downhole well tools includes: selecting one of the well tools for actuation by applying a voltage polarity to a set of conductors in the well, thereby operating a downhole pump connected to the well tool and displacing a piston of the well tool in one direction; and selecting the well tool for actuation by applying an opposite voltage polarity to the set of conductors, thereby operating the downhole pump and displacing the piston in an opposite direction. A system includes multiple electrical conductors in the well; and multiple control devices that control which of the well tools is selected for actuation in response to current flow in a set of the conductors, each of the control devices including at least one downhole pump which applies a pressure differential to an actuator of a respective one of the well tools.

Control of well tools utilizing downhole pumps

A method of selectively actuating well tools includes the steps of: selecting a well tool for actuation by current flow in one direction through a set of conductors; and selecting another well tool for actuation by opposite current flow through the set of conductors. A system includes multiple control devices that control which well tool is selected for actuation in response to current flow in at least one conductor set. A current direction in the conductors selects a certain well tool for actuation. A method of using n conductors to selectively actuate n*(n&#x2212;1) well tools includes the steps of: arranging the conductors into n*(n&#x2212;1)/2 sets; connecting the conductor sets to respective groups of the well tools; and controlling direction of current flow through at least one of the sets of conductors, thereby selecting at least one well tool in the respective group of the well tools for actuation.

Remote actuation of downhole well tools

A method for positional control of an actuator includes applying pressure to both an input line and an output line connected to the actuator and then releasing a predetermined volume of fluid from the output line, thereby displacing a piston of the actuator a corresponding predetermined distance. A system for positional control of an actuator includes the actuator included in a well tool positioned in a well; the input line connected to the actuator and extending to a remote location; the output line connected to the actuator and extending to the remote location; and a fluid volume measurement device connected to the output line at the remote location. The fluid volume measurement device is operative to meter the predetermined volume of fluid from the output line.

Positional control of downhole actuators

Pressure balanced downhole connections. A well system includes a well tool, a conduit assembly connected to the well tool, the conduit assembly including a conduit and a line positioned within the conduit, the line being connected to the well tool for operation of the well tool, and a device for equalizing pressure between an interior and an exterior of the conduit, the device being positioned downhole. A method of isolating a line in a subterranean well from well fluids in the well includes the steps of: connecting a conduit assembly to a device for equalizing pressure between an interior and an exterior of the conduit assembly, the conduit assembly including a line installed within a conduit; and positioning the conduit assembly and pressure equalizing device in the well.

Downhole pressure balanced electrical connections

A method and associated system for setting downhole control pressure. A method of setting a downhole control pressure includes the steps of: installing a pressure control system with a pressure source; connecting a proximal end of a line to the pressure source and a distal end to a well tool; and calibrating the system by applying an overshoot pressure to the proximal end, then sensing a settled pressure in the proximal end resulting from the overshoot pressure, and determining a mathematical relationship between the overshoot and settled pressures. A system for setting a downhole control pressure includes a pressure source, a pressure limiter and an interface for applying pressure to a proximal end of a control line and a well tool connected to a distal end of the control line. The well tool is operated in response to a predetermined settled pressure achieved at the distal end in response to an overshoot pressure being applied to the proximal end and the pressure limiter limiting application of pressure from the pressure source to the proximal end to the overshoot pressure.

Method and associated system for setting downhole control pressure

A pulse width modulated downhole flow control. A downhole flow control system includes a flow control device with a flow restrictor which variably restricts flow through the flow control device. An actuator varies a vibratory motion of the restrictor to thereby variably control an average flow rate of fluid through the flow control device. A method of controlling flow in a well includes the steps of: installing a flow control device in the well, the flow control device including a flow restrictor which variably restricts flow through the flow control device; and displacing the restrictor to thereby pulse a flow rate of fluid through the flow control device.

Pulse width modulated downhole flow control

A system and method are disclosed that provide for transmitting data from a downhole location to the surface. In one embodiment, a communications medium provides data transfer capabilities to the surface. A first downhole instrument is associated with the communications medium in order to measure a first downhole parameter and transmit first data relative to the first downhole parameter to the surface via the communications medium at a first time. A second downhole instrument is associated with the communications medium in order to measure a second downhole parameter and transmit second data relative to the second downhole parameter to the surface via the communications medium at a second time such that the first data is interleaved with the second data.
